Maya Angelou Passed at 86

Angelou passed today at 86. Rest in peace.

This is still very new and hasn't hit the national media

She had cancelled a number of engagements due to health.

In the past few years, she did not schedule speaking engagements that far in advance due to her health.

Please post images and memories of Angelou in this thread. My earliest memory of Angelou was in Roots.

Just now hearing about this. Such sad news. She was truly a national treasure.

Just listened to part of a Fresh Air interview of her, what an exceptional human being. It's been years since I read "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings", something I need to do again. I think I'll have to get the audio version, to hear both of her wonderful voices.

Speaking of "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings," here's the full movie:

Other good movies and documentaries can be found on the right of that Youtube page.

So sad to hear about the passing of the legendary Maya Angelou.

I was fortunate enough to have had a conversation with her 10 years ago that significantly changed the way I viewed myself as a teacher. She asked me what I did for a job as a young college graduate. I told her that I was in my first year of teaching. She then asked me how old I was. I replied, 22. Then Maya asked what grade I was teaching. Fifth, was my reply. The next question was, "What was the name of your 5th grade teacher?" -- my quick reply was, "Carol Mangum, she was an amazing teacher." Then with a pleased look on her face, she asked if I thought my students would remember my name fondly when they were 22. It was the first time I considered the incredible lasting impact teachers have on even the youngest of students.

Crazy enough, I have past students who are now nearing 22. I do hope they do look back on their 5th grade year as one of the best of their school careers.

She was such a wise, wise woman who touched so many.

Tom Joyner erroroniously reported yesterday that Maya Angelou was a Delta. The ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha are giving him the business this morning, telling him to "get it right." lol

...the caged bird, is indeed, now free.

Tom Joyner loses his mind sometimes. Some prolific women are honorary members of those other sororities. :)

He's a Que so statement one is somewhat self-evident.

No doubt that outstanding women fill the ranks of the other sororities as well. Had he made his mistake "in reverse," and asserted a known Delta with membership elsewhere, we both know DST would have verbally "kilt" him, Coleman love or not. :)

TJ already know -- keep APhiA's name out his mouth.

LOL. I can't bring myself to have an NPHC Battle in this thread. :p

Battling in a thread for an honorary member is like debating higher education with someone who never attended college. Maya Angelou is both an honorary AKA and an honorary doctorate (30) who never attended college.
