interested in joining a sorority (need info!)
i am hoping to transfer to rowan after i am done my two years at a local community college. i really don't know what to expect if i'm to be accepted and i want to join a sorority. i have a tendency to be very reclusive, and i am majoring in journalism, so i figure this would be my best bet to becoming more outgoing, and that will help me land a good job once i graduate.
could anyone tell me some info on what i can expect once i am at college and looking for a sorority? what exactly is a rush? i am totally in the dark about sororities period, and i need an explanation of what to expect. |
Well it depends on a lot of things.
Going through formal recruitment is a lot of things, fun, exciting, tense and sometime exhaustive. You will meet with a rho chi first who will tell you a lot about the rules of recruitment at your particular school. Your first round of parties will basically be a house tour and getting to know you type thing where you just have some small talk and learn about each sorority chapter. Then you will be invited back to some chapters and you may be cut from some chapters. The chapters you choose to return to have philanthropy themes or skits usually during their second rounds. This is a time to get to know the women of each chapter better and learn what makes them unique. Again you will be invited back to some houses and the houses that you return to will have a serious ceremony for you to show you their love for their sorority. This is preference. You will see how the sisters love each other and their bond. Afterwards if you feel you want to pledge to one of the sororities you will sign your bid card placing those chapters you would like to be a part of in order of your preference. The next day is bid day and you will find out which chapter you matched with and who your new sisters are. It can be hard and disheartening but in the end it is so rewarding! |
The sororities at Rowan are as follows:
Alpha Epsilon Phi Alpha Delta Epsilon Alpha Kappa Alpha Alpha Sigma Alpha Delta Phi Epsilon Delta Sigma Theta Delta Zeta Lambda Theta Alpha Phi Sigma Sigma Sigma Gamma Rho Sigma Sigma Sigma Zeta Phi Beta You should go to this website, and follow the links to some of these sororities to see what they're all about: http://www.rowan.edu/clubs/ Good luck! |
thanks you guys! :)

Also check out my recruitment FAQ, which will give you information about recruitment at the NPC level. NPHC, Latina and independent recruitment strategies are usually much different from those NPC groups.
The link is in my sig... |
Rowan is one of the the chapters in my region, so I know a little about the Greek Life there. I think they have formal recruitment in the Spring. It's your basic formal recruitment period. Recruitment has freshmen, sophomores and juniors, so don't worry about your age. They also have informal recruitment in the fall, which is basically COB parties. Alpha Delta Epsilon is a local sorority, not very large. Greek Life isn't huge there, but it's noticable, and that's what is important. I think the sororities have houses, we do anyway, but they're rented houses from local landlords and not actual national houses.
Good luck! |
shadokat - I think ADE is a Theta Phi Alpha colony right now. ;)

You know Sheila, last year about this time, they were attempting that and the campus was being jerky about it. I guess they finally got their shit together and let it happen. Good for them! :)
