the Lisa Frank question

So many sisters believe Lisa Frank (the artist) is a DPhiE. She apparently graduated from York College in Pennsylvania. DPhiE's Alpha Lambda chapter was chartered there in 1989.

According to wikipedia, Lisa Frank was born in 1955 and it only lists the prep school she went to. I don't see her mentioned on any notable alumnae lists.

Did this rumor begin because of our mascot?

Any insight?

Lisa Frank (the company) was around before 1989 so it's obviously not her. No doubt yet another case of seeing a name in the directory and while it is A Lisa Frank, it's not THE Lisa Frank.

If you scroll down to the bottom of the page, there are links to threads that Jamesmom made about a Lisa Frank who was a well-known DPhiE but says it wasn't the artist Lisa Frank.

Wasn't the artist an Alpha Gam?

I thought she was a KD from San Diego State?

eta - n/m I was thinking of a different woman:

Suzy Spafford Lidstrom
Beta Rho-San Diego State

Lidstrom is the creator of Suzy's Zoo greeting cards and stationery products marketed worldwide. Lidstrom's characters--over 200 in the Suzy's Zoo and Little Suzy's Zoo collections--are recognized internationally. Beginning in 2004, Suzy's Zoo calendars became the first commercially-printed calendars to include National Women's Friendship Day, a holiday created by Kappa Delta Sorority. Lidstrom was presented with Kappa Delta's Woman of Achievement award at the 1997 centennial convention.

I wish I could claim Lisa Frank as a sister, her designs pretty much got me through being a kid in the 80's and early 90's. Those sparkly stickers and binders and such in such vibrant colors, sigh. I totally forgot about her....

slight hijack re: another Delta Phi Epsilon artist/

According to DPhiE's website Susan Polis Schutz is a DPhiE from Rider University, Delta Sigma Chapter. Her poems have appeared on more than 400 million greeting cards featuring artwork by her husband Stephen Schutz. Perhaps she is being confused with the artist Lisa Frank.

ummmm… simple search on GC turned up this thread.*
ETA carnation already pointed that out. My bad.

Lisa Frank (the one with the stickers and stationery) lives here in Tucson. She and her husband went through a very public, pretty ugly divorce in 2005. It was a hot mess. She retained control of her business. There used to be a huge warehouse out by the airport painted in garish colors but I haven't noticed it in years, not even sure it's still there.

Anyway, not sure she went to college, let alone was in any kind of sorority.

And I adore Suzy's Zoo!

According to one article, Lisa Frank is a nightmare to work for:

The article also mentions that she started her business while studying art at the University of Arizona.

Lisa Frank is not a DPhiE. Susan Polis-Schultz is :)

Hi, No, the artist is NOT a sister, but it is not the artist we are referring to when we say Lisa Frank was a sister. In 1989 pledged w a girl named Lisa Frank at the Epsilon Xi chapter of DPhiE. The semester following our induction she fell ill and left school w a diagnosis of Leukemia. The following year it was determined she needed a bone marrow transplant and we rallied to try to find her a match. Unfortunately she passed away while she was waiting for a donor match. The chapter has had many fundraising events in her honor over the years, so that's probably where you have heard the name. She may not have been the artist but she was an amazing sister that we continue to mourn to this day.

Thanks.

So interesting that Suzie's Zoo was made by a KD. When I was in school, the Sigma Kappa chapter used Suzie's Zoo characters as their local mascots. They even made beautiful window letters for the dorm with those characters. It inspired me to make letters with pandas for the AOII windows. The interesting thing is that we also had a KD chapter on campus.

Well, that'll happen :) How many times have non-Alpha Xi chapters used Muppets or Sesame Street over the years? Except in that case she wasn't really given credit for her work until years later so I didn't even know those characters were co-designed by a sister.

This is so over the top that it kind of makes me want to go work there.
