locals' convention
I know I've seen this idea batted around before, but I've never seen anything really done about it. So here's the deal: Omega Delta at UMass Amherst will organise a local fraternities' convention for this summer, IF ten fraternities say they'll come. The school has massive facilities designed for academic conferences- we're completely set up for it.
I'm thinking a Friday night, Saturday, and Sunday morning. Friday night, social stuff, trips to local bars and clubs, or stuff on campus for underaged guys. Saturday, workshops on rush, housing, problem solving, etc.- chance to compare notes and learn new techniques. Saturday night, intramural competitions- soccer, basketball, etc. Sunday, closing breakfast. I would think we could have this middle of July sometime. If this sounds like something you'd be interested in, e-mail jfossell@student.umass.edu. -Jason Fossella "FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT GO U-MASS!" |
Well, I thought it was a good idea, but apparently no one else does.
|
Well everyone was gun-ho about a local sorority convention and I haven't heard much more about it lately. What was kind of funny about it was I think I was one of the people who initially had that idea and I kind of got left out of everything :(
Have a nice day :) |
I'm still very interested in a local sororities convention. What has to be done to make it happen? Unfortunately, we cannot host it--lack of house and lack of campus (NYC school) prevents us from doing so, but I'd be willing to put "man-hours" into it. We're a small developing chapter, and it would be great to meet other locals who've made it and share with other young and growing chapters.

I just had a bit of a chat with DHGirl, and we're gonna plan a convention for the summer in Amherst, MA, for local fraternities AND sororities. If you'd like to come, or you have suggestions for speakers or workshops, or whatever, e-mail me at jfossell@student.umass.edu.

Hope it can work
Hey... Hope the convention at UMass Amherst can work. I was trying to get involved with this back when it was talked about in the summer, but nothing really materialized :(
So I hope it can work this time around. I am an alumni of a sorority at Emerson College in Boston, MA... so once the details are nailed down, please spread the information out because I am sure both actives and alumni from my sorority would love to go :) Thanks! |
I've contacted UMass Convention Services, and we're working out details. From all the interested groups, this is what I'd like to know:
First, when, as in a month. I'd assume we'd want to do this during the summer or very late this semester. UMass has finals the week of May 20, so it'd have to be either a couple weeks before that or sometime after. We don't go back to school until after Labour Day. Second, how much, generally, per person. You're probably going to end up staying in a dorm (if it needs to be a handicapable space, speak up- we only have three halls that are, and they need to be requested early). We can also do meals at the dining halls. During the year, they're pretty good considering they turn out 50,000 meals a day. I'm sure they keep the quality up during the summer. Third, does anyone have ideas for workshops, or alumni who might want to do workshops? We just had our Greek Life conference, and I'm going to try to draw in some of the same speakers, as well as some others we know. I'm going to work out a format, and start negoiating prices with the university. E-mail me with responses. Thanks all. |
One more thing: how long? One day, two, three, or four? I think either a Thursday-Sunday or a Friday-Sunday would be best.

You know it would be really n ice to get together a MD/DC local Greek Convention. SO hey MD'ers or DC'ers maybe we all can get something going since everyone else is making the move :D

Hey MD/DC- you're welcome to come up here. We have chapters from as far as Michigan who are interested- you're practically local.

ideas
Hey everyone :)
We put brainstorming ideas for the conference on the agenda for our last meeting and came up with a few ideas--feel free to add on... events-- formal banquet lyp synch competition dare war large scale community service possibility coffee house/open mike thing workshops/forums-- -going national -the ins and outs of setting up your new fraternity or sorority (emblems, ceremonies, sheild, etc) mixing drinks, toga making fundraising/finances community service event planning--mixers, greek week alcoholism, drugs, hazing and standards website design public speaking/leadership exercises and trust or group-work dealing without a house So it's kind of just a start of ideas--but a whole bunch of things are up for input... |
By the way, I like the idea of it being after finals and would be interested in four days, but with internships and jobs and whatnot, it might be cool to do an optional fourth day--could have people register for either three or four?
