Greek Myths Debunked
As I was walking back from class this morning, I thought of how last fall, as a rushee I had heard so many rumors about Greek Life (not neccessarily all bad ones), most of them which I found to NOT be true. I was thinking it would be a good idea for all the current members on here to post examples of myths (not about any GLO in particular---or if it is, just use "ABC" or "XYZ"), from their campus that are NOT true and de-bunk them so-to-speak (tell the truth about it), so potential new members won't be afraid of rushing. Here are some examples from what I heard at MTSU last semester before I rushed......
"sorority girls always have to cross their legs when they sit down" TRUTH: although it is "lady-like" to cross your legs, especially when wearing a skirt or dress, NO ONE FORCES YOU to cross your legs! "sorority girls always have to dress alike" TRUTH: on particular formal occasions, such as rituals, many sororities (as well as fraternities) require their members to dress similarly, but this is NOT an everyday occurance. "if you're in a sorority, they'll tell you who to date" TRUTH: who you date is YOUR business, and no one will tell you otherwise (except maybe your parents, but that's another story). "you can only date fraternity guys if you're in a sorority" TRUTH: you can date anyone you want to, fraternity member or not. "if you join (ABC) they'll make you dye your hair blonde if you're not already blonde" TRUTH: I don't know who made this one up, but it's ridiculous, and untrue. Even if a sorority does happen to have all blonde girls, this doesn't mean they only pick blonde girls to join. "sorority girls will circle your fat" TRUTH: This is the worst rumor I've heard. If your sisters make you do this, it's called HAZING: report it immediatly, and QUIT! I have never heard anyone GREEK say anything like this is true. "you have to get paddled to join a sorority/fraternity" TRUTH: Again, this is HAZING! I have not heard of a true incidence of this on my campus, and if I did, I would report it to the Greek Life office. "sorority girls are snobby," TRUTH: This stereotyping really irritates me! Although I'm sure there are some girls who are snobby, who happen to be in a sorority, this doesn't apply to every sorority girl. This is just as bad as saying "all non-Greeks are dorks". There are PLENTY of non-Greeks are more snobby than any Greeks I know, and yes, even some dorky Greeks!!! :D "Greeks are stupid/ditzy" TRUTH: Greeks tend to have higher GPAs than non-Greeks, as well as more involvement in Student Government and Honors Societies, etc. :) Okay, that's all I have for now, but please post any rumors you know the truth about on here. If you're a rushee, feel free to ask about something you've heard so that someone on here can explain the truth about it to you. Please, nothing obnoxious!!! |
How about:
"Joining a sorority is buying your friends." Most sorority women have friends outside the chapter and in other chapters. You don't have to join to be friends! And the money you do pay as a member doesn't go toward making people like you - it goes to sponsoring events, paying for room and board, etc. |
Great one fuzzy!!! The best quote I've heard about that one is "If I payed for my friends, I didn't pay enough." :)

Here are some of the other threads that have already discussed the myths - funny reading:

I checked out those links and I got to read FRED's hostile posts. I just want to prepare anyone else who may check them out.

Myth: Sorority girls are all blonde and skinny, and they only like girls who are cheerleaders and prom queens.
Fact: If this was true my chapter would only have about 7 members! |
oh sorry I didn't mean to post something previously posted...don't get mad at me people, please! :(

oh sweetie nobody will get mad at you! i just wanted to add to the list of myths so nothing will get left out :) |
It irks me that people will get mad if someone puts a new thread up that may have been discussed a year ago-get over it, if you don't want to read the new post then don't.
We love you ZetaLuvBunny and thanks Sarah for the links to the other threads, I have heard of this Fred Hatchet guy and now I see how far out he really was-scarry!!!!! Quote:

Great topic, zetaluvbunny ~~
This is an important topic of discussion, especially since we have so many people who visit these boards looking for the "Truth". I know that when I was in high school, we started hearing dumb rumors about friends who were already in college who had to change their names because they were in a sorority, and didn't come home ever. How lame! Thankfully I have an independent mind but I know a lot of people who are influenced by those myths and rumors. We all know that the reason those people didn't go home every weekend is because they were having so much fun!!! |
Tridelta- wow, the name change thing is a new one to me!
:D So true about the weekend thing! At my school it seems as though Greeks are the only ones who do stay here on the weekends! MTSU sadly has a reputation of being a "suitcase campus". :( |
Silliness...
There was a rumor when I went through Rush that if you were a Tri Delt (they had a reputation as being rich "daddy's girls"), you weren't allowed to put a DDD window sticker on your car if it was older than two years old. My Tri Delt friends got the biggest laugh out of that one!
