Attention K-Mart shoppers......
 

Looks like K-Mart is going to collapse now that they are going bankrupt. Hopefully they won't have to close all their stores, because it means a lot of jobs lost. Wal mart was just to good to beat. What do you all think about the situation?

You mean bringing back the "Blue Light Special" didnt help??

Thats too bad. Hate to see someone lose a job with everything being the way it is....

Here in Detroit they had some employees on one of the morning shows right after they made the announcement. They were not happy campers to put it mildly.It's pretty scary to think that so many people could be out of a job soon.

I hope they keep the K-Mart gas station open because its the cheapest gas in town. Right now its only 96 cents for unleaded.

I think it's sad that Kmart has been driven out of business by Wal-Mart and Target. My grandmother worked for Kmart for years and still gets together with her old co-workers once a month for lunch. :)

Apparently, Wal-Mart was originally able to gain the competitive edge over Kmart by hiring lots of part-time people so that they wouldn't have to give them the benefits that full-time employees normally receive. Kmart stuck to their regular hiring practices of full-time people with good benefits, and now they're having to pay for being a good employer! It just doesn't seem right. :(

I thought they announced that stores wouldnt be closing. The type of bankruptcy they filed gave them relief from current debts but allowed them to rebuild their money.

If anything...they just put a giant blue light on the roof of the stores ;)

Troy, Michigan-based Kmart said its 2,114 stores remain open for now, but it will review their future by the end of April. Wall Street analysts have said Kmart needs to close around 300 to 400 stores.

The 105-year-old retailer, which filed for voluntary bankruptcy in Chicago, said it hopes to emerge from reorganization in 2003. But some Wall Street analysts cast doubt on the retailer's future.

``It remains questionable, even after reorganization, whether Kmart can compete effectively against Wal-Mart and Target,'' George Strachan, retail analyst at Goldman Sachs, said in a research note.

It has been many years since I've shopped at K-Mart and the reason I quit going there was because they never, ever had enough cashiers and I was forced to waste lots of time standing in line. Because of that, I started going to Wal-Mart until it was taken over by the local mullet-wearing redneck contingent. Now I shop at Target and am happy with the merchandise as well as the customer service.

Kmart just can't compete w Target and Wal-Mart for quality of merchandise. And the KMart stores I've been to-- ick--dirty, disorganzied, icky displays-- whereas Target and Wal-Mart are so much fun to wander through.

What I wonder is what will happen to Martha Stewart. Her contract with Kmart allows her to bolt in case of a bankruptcy.

I shop at Target and Wal-Mart. I prefer Target, cleaner stores, a more upscale clientele.

Target has nicer things, definately.

I saw on CNN last week that Martha Stewart has decided to stick with Kmart and will continue offering her line of products at the stores. :)

While beleive it or not, We in KC KS only have 2 stores to shop at, K-M and W-M. I do what I can with K-M as they are a block from my little shop!

I also know what W-M did to my town of Lamar Mo. Home of Brother Harry Truman and Cousin Wyatt Earp, they would also kill business for Thorco and O'Sullivan Industries, the pre made furniture people!
After John Deere Pulled out I will never buy anything that (Runs Like A Deere).

I think K-M over extended and if they do not get it together , they may close like Venture, Wards, and some of the other Retail stores! We just lost a home Owned Lumber Co. Payless CashWays! They may have been in some of your areas. I will always shop with the under dog to try and help them! That is why I started a Local on campus!

If you cannot help the small, it is the same thing as on your campus.

Name the Largest Organization on your campus! GDI!

It's so odd seeing K-Mart fall. When I was a little girl it was the K-Mart and Wallmarts that everyone frequented. I remember loving Wallmart because there was always an old man/woman standing at the door with a huge smile, a sticker and sometimes a balloon. Now the greeters avoid your glance and the stores are just plain dirty (IMHO). K-mart became the same way. I didn't see the point in going someplace that couldn't upkeep its store.
Target (Super Target) is my favorite place to shop for everyday bargans. It's clean, organized, friendly...hardly a wait in line (etc.).
It's sad that they're declairing bankruptcy, but as I heard on FOX news they haven't made an attempt to win over the competition. They've kept their prices high (in comparision to Target/Wallmart) and the quality they carry isn't as good to other chain stores.
They've been in business for a long time so they were doing SOMETHING right...but I think its time they do something different!
