Sororities
 

Hello all! I was just wondering if sororities are well mixed and grounded with minorites? If so what university do you attend? Is it hard to be accepted if a minority into an initiation?

If you are looking for a multicultural sorority, I only know of one and that is Theta Nu Xi. I'm sure there are others so I would just so some research over the 'net

Lots of historically white sororities are as integrated as the rest of society today - none of them have rules about whites-only, that's for sure. That said, it depends from region to region and campus to campus. There was a big news story recently about an African American rushee who did not get a bid at from any chapter at a Southern university. This university, in fact, had NEVER had a non-white sorority member!

But this is the exception and not the rule. Most places you'll find welcome any ethnicity.

That said, whether you want to join a historically white sorority, a sorority created for a specific ethnic group, or one designed to be multicultural, is up to you and what your university offers. The NPC or "white" sororities tend to be bigger, financially stronger, and have houses. The NPHC or "black" sororities offer a rich heritage and the strongest philanthropy. The newer multicultural and ethnic sororities offer a chance to be a part of something new and vibrant. See what your campus has to offer!

I went to Michigan and our "historically white" greek orgs are very diverse. I am in one.

As far as saying that "white" ones are financially stronger and have houses. It all depends on the campus and region of the company. BGLO's are very strong down south and many of them have just as many members as alot of the NPC/NIC houses do and are just as strong financially. Housing depends on the campus too. Many NPHC's have them, many dont.

I'm from the midwest, and at least at my school, there are no problems whatsoever with different ethnicities. Although my school is really diverse anyway. Race or culture isn't even thought of when considering a PNM, we look at their personality, not their skin color.

We do have a strong BGLO here, but that doesn't affect who we consider. If a girl is interested in us, she always has a fair chance regardless of ethinicity.

I think it has a lot to do with the mixed ethnicities of the school. Here at BU, we have a lower population of African-Americans, but a higher population of Asians, and this is reflected in the Greek system here. Despite this, I know here I have never heard of a girl or guy not getting a bid based on ethnicity.

I know in my sorority we are very diverse, with girls of many ethnicities and religions, and I feel just as close to all of them.

As far as Gamma Phi's in other chapters, If I'm remembering this correctly it was awhile back, one magazine(I think it was Seventeen) did an article about this. It profiled 2 sororities, one historically black and the other white, and they both had sisters of the other ethnicity, and how this didn't affect their bond as sisters. I'm proud to say our Alpha chapter was profiled.
