GPA Question for Formal Rush!
Hi! I am currently a second semester freshman at Purdue. I would like to participate in formal rush this coming 2014 fall semester as a sophomore. My GPA from last semester is a 2.85 (I know, not terrible, but not excellent either), and it'll probably still be around there after this semester ends. Is that a terrible GPA to rush with, especially as a sophomore? I know many houses at many schools already don't prefer to take in sophomores..and I've heard if I rushed as a sophomore I'd need like a 3.7 GPA to be able to compete with the freshmen coming in.

Have no clue about Purdue but your Greek Life office can give you information on the current GPAs of the groups there. That can help you determine if you have much chance of success. That being said, I'm sure you'd be at a disadvantage.

The Fall 2013 GPAs are posted on Purdue's Greek life site. They range from 2.84-3.27, with several lower than 3.0. I would recommend doing everything you can to get up to a 3.0. Is summer school an option? At least your GPA isn't horribly lower than the posted averages.

Purdue's GPAs may seem lower than other campuses, but the majority of the students are science, engineering, medical, or math majors. Considering that, the GPAs listed in the report make sense.

It also may depend on what college/program you are in. The business school has a pretty clear anti-grade inflation policy, and I don't know if others do, but my overall impression is that a 3.0 at Purdue is more favorable than a 3.0 may look at other schools.

Did you go through COB? What kind of grade feedback did you get then? What is your major?

Each NPC sorority will have its own policy on "grade risks" and on minimum GPA requirements for membership. And no, we won't typically discuss that here as it is generally regarded as part of membership selection, which is private.
