Maybe It's Just Me

Would anyone else think it a bit weird for a non Greek to make a sorority paddle for a friend who is in a sorority?

Xidelt 03-20-2014 09:17 PM

*raises hand*

Yeah, that's weird.

I guess it depends on the culture of the organization and of the campus. It's only weird to me if you know the non-Greek wants to be a member of the organization.

Titchou 03-20-2014 09:24 PM

If a friend of mine did that, I'd think it was more than weird...

Ok, NOW it's weird.

I didn't think much of it at first. I've seen non-Greeks make/buy Greeks stuff for initiation, or graduation, or whatever; lettered shirts, mascot stuffed animals, jewelry, etc. I didn't even think the paddle was weird. I figured it would just have the letters and her name and be nicely painted or something.

But… her big's name? This straight up looks like a big/little paddle, and to me, she crossed a weird line.

The only way it wouldn't be weird is if she made the paddle for the big because the little is artistically challenged. But if that's the case, I hope the big doesn't find out. I wouldn't want to know that someone else made my paddle for me, even if my little could only draw stick figures and glued the wooden letters to her hands.

The "spring" being crooked would bug me the most...but yeah that's weird.

It's not just you.

I have a creative side. One of the many hats I've worn in my career has been web designer. So, if a friend approached me for ideas for a paddle or other gift to give to her big or little, I'd be happy to give some suggestions, or even a pattern for a knitted or cross-stitched item. But I'd leave it up to the friend to actually create the item.

This doesn't seem weird at all to me. Guess it's a "depends on the org" thing, like Sen said.

I'm thinking that you should remove the photo from your previous post because it contains a lot of identifying information.

DrPhil 03-21-2014 07:59 AM

Please remove that photo.

This depends on the context. I wouldn't find it weird if this is someone who makes stuff like this like a non-Greek who makes Greek stuff/Greek vendor. However, I usually only patronize licensed Delta vendors and many of those are run my BGLO members.

I would find it weird if I didn't request that this be made; the person doesn't normally make this type of stuff; and/or if the person is a Delta aspirant or Eternal Pyramid in the 18-50 age range. I wouldn't find it weird if an Eternal Pyramid in her 50s-80s made this except I'd use this as yet another reason to lovingly pick on her about being an Eternal Pyramid. :)

Oh wow. That looks like my chapter.

Sciencewoman 03-21-2014 08:51 AM

^^^ Confirming that it would be a good idea to remove the picture and/or delete posts.

I can understand making it in a subcontractor sort of way as some people are absolute disasters with anything artsy craftsy...like if someone said help, please, I need to make my little/big a paddle and it'll be a mess if I do anything with glue.

But if someone just made it for a friend not at her request and presented it to her? That's not just weird, that's Single White Female territory.
