re-pledging...is this a thing?

Hey all,

So my story is a little bit complicated but I will try to keep it brief. Due to some internal issues, after already becoming a sister of a sorority, I had to resign from the sorority. Let me explain a little bit. I was recruited, became a sister, I was even secretary for a while. Unfortunately due to some personal issues, I had to put sorority life on the back burner and certain people didn't like it.
I turned in my badge and formally resigned. Now I am back on my own two feet and REALLY missing my sisters and the feeling of sisterhood. Is it possible for me to go back to my sorority or will I have to pledge again all over? I'm willing to re-pledge but there's so much involved (big sister choice even though I already had one) and other issues internally.
Have any of you left your sorority and RE-joined?

If you were a member of an NPC sorority then you may be out of luck. Some NPC groups allow for re-instatement after resignation after graduation, some allow for re-instatement while still in school, some do not allow for re-instatement at all.
If you were an initiated member of an NPC, you cannot pledge another NPC at any time.

My advice to you is to contact your (Inter)National headquarters and ask what your options are. If you are allowed to re-instate, there will probably be a re-instatement fee.

Even if it is possible per the national policies of your sorority, your chapter sisters would certinaly have to vote to allow you to be reinstated. You say that "certain people" didn't like what you did. I am only reading what you wrote, but it sounds like reinstatement (you would not pledge again) might not be an option.

As others have said it really depends on your org. OP I would suggest contacting your group's HQ to see if this a possibility. Each org has their own policies on issues such as this.

The OP posted this in the thread about disabilities:

I think, based on the user name, the OP may be a member of an NPC sorority. So I would agree that contacting the headquarters is the best way to go.

Wait, are you trying to pledge a local on your campus now? I thought you wanted to try to reaffiliate with DZ.

I would also like to explain that my school is rather odd in their recruitment procedures. All of the organizations do not rush at the same time and we don't have houses so I pretty much will be going to this recruitment event only.
Then I will talk with our CCD and our new president about my situation. I would like to clarify that the reasons for leaving were financial and personal. I am hoping with my situation having improved, and a large group of girls that I am still close with, that I can plead my case and come back better than ever.

Thanks for all your help.

If this is an NPC group, you should NOT be attending a recruitment event as a PNM. You are not and will not ever be a PNM again. You were a member and resigned your membership. You need to contact your HQ about procedures to be re-instated. You CANNOT be repledged to your group nor any other NPC group - no matter what style recruitment your campus has. What you are doing is very misguided and I urge you not to go to this event.

"Organization of your choice"... What the hell does that mean? are you even bothering to read ANY of the advice being given to you here?

Xidelt 02-24-2014 12:01 AM

You have no business going to the recruitment event, especially if it is for your former chapter. It would be weird and awkward and just detract from the purpose of the event: for the active members to focus on meeting PNMS and attracting new members. Your presence is unfair to both the sisters and rushees. Plus, what kind of message would it send to the rushees: "hey, don't bother putting in the time, effort, and money to become a member! You can just hang around for free! Have you met our former sister, the Comeback Kid?"

The leadership of your former chapter likely has no say in whether you can be reinstated or not. You are focusing your efforts on the wrong party. You need to contact your IHQ.

Does anyone else feel like they are shouting into the wind?

Also, I have no idea how my words have been twisted to be a negative thing. I was specifically invited by the president of this chapter to this event. I was also asked by several sisters to come. IF in the event I am asked to leave, I will not be making a scene about it. I am simply going where I have been invited to go.
IF, at recruitment, my Chapter director states that I need to make a formal request through headquarters, I will discuss more indepth with that person.

I would like to clarify that NONE of this was meant to be perceived as me taking advantage of a situation. I was not ASKED to leave my sorority, I felt the need to because I was going through extreme personal issues and financial issues. Now that I am back on my own two feet and I have been invited to the organization's recruitment event, I don't see the harm in going.

It doesn't matter if you were asked to resign from your sorority or you made the decision on your own. You are NOT a member of your sorority. You are not an alumna, either. You should not be attending recruitment events. It is really simple.... You are not eligible to rush. Period.

And depending on your sorority's rules, you may or may not be eligible for membership reinstatement. It may not even be up to the chapter to allow or deny.

and now I'll listen as the wind swooshes past......

I won't pretend to know the reinstatement procedures for any NPC other than my own, but I'm willing to bet that all of them would not leave this decision solely up to the chapter into which you were initiated. YOU NEED TO CONTACT YOUR (INTER)NATIONAL HQ before you do anything. So many people have said this to you, and yet your thought is: 1) Attend recruitment event, 2) Talk to the president of the chapter, and 3) Become an active sister again.

THIS IS NOT HOW IT WORKS.

It doesn't matter why you left. You left. You are no longer a sister.

Bringing this up to the Chapter Director AT the recruitment event is NOT the way to go about this. It's completely inappropriate. The recruitment event is held to get to know potential members, NOT to talk to you about your problems.

Just because the president invited you does not mean that she is right in doing so. You may show up and other sisters could be pissed. As others have pointed out, you're now getting for free what other sisters are paying for. That's not fair to anyone. Why put yourself in that position?

If your (inter)national organization decides that you can be reinstated and your chapter still loves you as much as you claim, then you'll have no problem going back to them. However, you're going about this all backwards. You need to be patient and go through the proper channels to get this done. Don't make the chapter think that everything is fixed before it actually is, only to have them find out later that you're trying to "sneak" back in the wrong way (especially when we're telling you what the correct way is). Be respectful!

She has never responded to our question regarding whether this is an NPC group. If it is, and someone can figure which campus and which NPC group, I would be more than willing to advise their HQ about what's going on.

carnation 02-24-2014 08:18 AM

In her intro, she said she was a DZ at Gallaudet.

AZTheta 02-24-2014 09:14 AM

You are overreacting. Please step away from the keyboard. People here were trying to help. Youu got great advice right away. Now it seems that you didn't hear what you wanted to hear; you persisted in justifying your position, and that is why people became irritated.

I wish you good luck. I know that for my organization, the reinstatement process is difficult and few succeed. But you are in a different organization and that may not be the case.
