Hollywood star Shirley Temple dies

Quote:

Former Hollywood child star Shirley Temple has died at the age of 85.

The actress found fame as a young girl in the 1930s in films like Bright Eyes, Stand Up and Cheer and Curly Top.

After retiring from films in 1950 at the age of 21, Temple returned to the public eye as a Republican candidate for Congress and as a US diplomat.

She died on Monday at home in Woodside, California, from natural causes. "She was surrounded by her family and caregivers," a statement said.

That's sad.

(Don't know why the winky face appeared. It really is sad.)

A legend.

I still have a Shirley Temple doll that my grandmother gave me. She was a ray of light during a very dark time (the Depression of the 30s) and my grandmother and mother loved her.

tinydancer - I think she would appreciate the winky face! She had a great wink.

Even though she was 85, this is such a huge shock.

I loved her movies as a young child. Very sad.

Just last week, my DH & I were wondering if Shirley was still alive, and googled her. For some reason, we also prayed for her. I was a great fan of hers as a child, and my aunt gave me her (much battered!) Shirley Temple doll, still dressed as Baby Takes a Bow.

I can't think of one person who made as many people happy, especially during the Depression - would that more people could make that claim! I hope that the Good Ship Lollipop ferried her right into the arms of the Lord.

Greek tie-in: Shirley Temple Black's granddaughter is an initiate of Chi Omega at Stanford (graduated approx. 2003-4).

I can't really believe she's gone. I adored her films and pulled out my DVD of The Little Princess to watch later. What an amazing woman!

I think The Little Princess is my favorite.

So sad. Love her! Although some of her very early movies are just awkward to watch.
