How is it possible for a girl to be initiated into two sororities?

One of my sisters told me that she was initiated into another house on our campus but dropped for personal reasons. Now two years later she is a part of our house. I don't understand how that is possible. Can someone please tell me how this is done?

carnation 02-05-2014 11:52 PM

It's not.

Are these two NPC sororities she's referring to? Or two NPHC sororities? If so, this isn't possible. However, if one of the sororities was a local or a service sorority, this could very well be the case.

Or maybe she used the word "initiated," but in fact, she only went through a pledging ceremony?

Details (without providing any identifying information, of course)?

Technically, it is "possible." It is against the regulations and is extremely rare. But, it's "possible" and has happened for a number of reasons.

These are two Panhellenic sororities. She told me that she was initiated; she seems to be a smart girl, so I'm assuming she knows the difference between pledging and initiation ceremonies.

Initiated into 2 NPCs on the same campus? Nope, never happened. Are you planning to try to quit yours as per your other post and join another one?

If she was actually initiated into the first NPC sorority, then there is simply no chance that she was initiated into a 2nd NPC sorority. I can't think of a single exception to this rule, but I am willing to be shown evidence of it happening...

You are SURE it was 2 NPC organizations, right?

Right. I MIGHT understand if someone got away with this having joined a sorority on one campus, transferred, and joined a different one on another campus… but on the same campus within a couple years? No way.

And even in the transferring situation, I can't imagine anyone would get away with this nowadays, especially with social media and people posting their lives on the internet.

Exactly what I was wondering.

I feel like a lot of girls don't like me and don't respect my opinion. For instance, I wave at a lot of my sisters when I see them walking around campus but many of them ignore me. If I try to give constructive criticism when it's asked for at a recruitment workshop, girls will whisper about me while I'm talking. I love the organization but I don't want to pay all this money to be around a bunch of girls who don't treat me like a sister. What should I do?

At this point you need to stop posting. It is easy to know where you go to school and what chapter you are in.

Ask "her" how it's possible, how "she was inititated into another houser on our campus but dropped...." and "now two years later she is a part of our house".

If this is the case she can tell you "how this is done".

I'm sure she would love to tell you all about it since she already shared such info with you?

I have heard of really scary cases where someone actually AIed into 2 different sororities, no clue why. I believe they were rightfully booted from both. However, 2 sororities on the same campus? Not gonna happen.

I also remember a situation I read about in the late 1980s, early 1990s when a woman transferred from one midwestern campus to another. She was initiated into an NPC group at the first campus. She transferred to a university where her group did not have a chapter. She went through recruitment again, and was initiated into another NPC group. During an intercollegiate sporting event, some women from her first campus saw her wearing letters for the second organization. Much correspondence ensued and she ultimately resigned or was dismissed from the second one (or maybe both, that part I do not recall).

And at Mermaid's campus specifically, underscore what Carnation said.

As have I. I'm familiar with women who pledged one NPC, depledged and later pledged and initiated into another NPC on the same campus.

Long story short, in the end the internet/social media will eventually out a woman who has initiated into two NPC groups. The internet doesn't forget folks.
