quota plus?
ok. seeing as how im not in a sorority, i was wondering what "quota plus 1" or however many means. does that mean you make quota plus another person? how and why can that happen? thanks!!

It means exactly what you said, a sorority will meet quota and then have a few more. This happened in our chapter during fall rush, and another chapter also made over quota. I'm not exaclty sure how this happens, or why, though. Maybe someone else knows!

we don't have to open bid to do that...we can just take girls until we fill to total after quota, assuming that they matched with us.

The way it is supposed to work is that when Panhellenic is doing bid matching they (or the computer) keeps going until everyone is filled to quota or has gotten through their bid list. Then, if the campus panhellenic allows it, they will match the remaining women as quota additions to either their first choice or the smaller chapter, depending upon the campus rules. Some chapters limit quota additions to 10% of the pledge class size, or something like that too.
Chapters that don't match quota can try to snap bid the women who do not match in bid matching or as quota additions. Filling your vacant quota spots or to ceiling is called COB. |
Chapters can make quota plus 1,2,3 etc. (as lauradav said, limited at 10% of pledge class size, determined the day before pref) during formal rush if they are under campus total, at total or over total. The chapter's membership has little effect regarding quota additions during formal rush. It does however come into play for snap bidding, COB and informal rush.

Angels&Arrows and lauradav are correct... what Tibi is talking about is COB/informal rush, which can happen any time after formal rush is over. Basically it's a way of minimizing the number of people who followed all the rules but still didn't match. (I believe that if you suicide you're ineligible to become a quota addition.)

Quote:
It happens when a PNM has listed the maximum number of sororities on her pref card, and is not matched to any of them by the computer. This means they all filled quota before she made it onto their bid list. She is then hand-placed in the sorority with the smallest total chapter size, as long as that sorority hasn't taken the maximum number of quota additions. |
The quota addition rules in the greenbook are not a unanimous agreement.
NPC actually recommends that bids be matched to Quota only and says that the procedures that they list SHOULD be followed in the event that a campus is doing quota additions. I have been to several schools where the college panhellenic has gone as much as 12% over quota b/c of campus circumstances (makes the most houses match Q, places all of the women who signed preference, etc.) |
I don't understand how a chapter with say 80 members can take 60 new members during formal rush at a school where total is 100. Can anyone help me out?
|
Quota (new member class size) is not set based on Total Chapter size under the Quota/Total system. Quota is set based on the number of women still participating in rush divided by the number of chapters on campus after a certain round of rush.
Total is set by the college panhellenic based on average chapter size. It usually increases or decreases once in a while based on changes in average chapter size to allow chapters to stay competitive. |
