The V@#$%^ Monologues
 

Yeah, that's the name of this show that will premeire on HBO in February. I remember seeing it advertised down here during the summer when I was in line waiting to see Comic View. I was like WTH?

HBO is showing sneak peeks now.

I guess its going to be a "girl thang".

I think it was also a play by that name on Broadway.

I think this was originally an off-Broadway show. I remember the girls on The View discussing this sometime last year when it first started to make news. From my understanding, it's a play of monologues by different women about being women. I know that Joy Behar and Calista Flockhart both participated in the show, giving their own monologues.

I'll probably watch it out of curiosity since I've been hearing about it for over a year. I hope the "V" part is just a name and that it doesn't end up being two hours of hearing about different women's "business."

Also Kim Fields, and Melody Thomas Scott (Nikki from Y&R) did this play off broadway.

I think (someone correct me if I'm wrong) that Oprah has also done this play b4. I can't wait to see it.

"I was worried about vaginas. I was worried about what we think about vaginas, and even more worried that we don’t think about them…So I decided to talk to women about their vaginas, to do vagina interviews, which became vagina monologues. I talked with hundreds of women. I talked to old women, young women, married women, single women, lesbians, college professors, actors, corporate professionals, sex workers, African American women, Hispanic women, Asian American women, Native American women, Caucasian women, Jewish women. At first, women were reluctant to talk. They were a little shy. But once they got going, you couldn’t stop them. "

Check out www.vaginamonologues.com for more information. I don't know what they're going to do on HBO, but I can tell you that the monologues themselves are amazing.

Eve Ensler, the woman who wrote them, interviewed women around the country about, well, their vaginas. Some of the monologues are silly, some are sexy, some funny and some are troubing and painful -- all of them reflect the actual experiences of actual women.

When I was in law school, our Women's Law Caucus first heard about the Vagina Monologues and how colleges and universities around the country were performing them on Valentine's Day to raise awareness of women's issues, especially violence against women, and to raise money for women's organizations. We decided to perform the monologues, and I have to say it was one of the most amazing things I have ever done in my life. We were the first to do it at our university, and we got a pretty good audience and it was well received. Even more importantly, it was so empowering, for us all, as women, to be involved in something so big and so amazing. The monologue I performed was risque, but it was also funny and touching (I thought), and I felt very powerful and connected to women everywhere standing up on a stage and saying the words I said, as women at universitites around the country stood up and said the same things.

I also saw the monologues performed in Chicago, and I have to say that if you ever have the chance, go!

Sorry for rambling so long, but I just had to share!

This premiered on HBO last night, but I was out to dinner with my Valentine, so I missed it. Did anybody catch it? Was it any good?

Has anyone else seen this play IN PERSON? I watched the HBO special and was wondering if there was anything different to expect. Our school had a MAJOR contoversy about showing it on campus. Thanks!

I saw the live version of Vagina Monologues about a year and a half ago. The tickets were $50, and while it wasn't worth that much, it was definitely entertaining. The run I saw featured Kim Fields, so that was a plus. The whole point of the play (besides raising money to end genital mutilation around the world) was to teach women to love, cherish and embrace their vaginas, LOL. What could be wrong with that? I haven't seen the HBO version yet, so I can't compare the two. I understand that most schools would be skeptical about showing it, but believe me, it is much less vulgar than most movies shown on movie night. It is tastefully done. It's the kind of show you could go see with your mother and not be embarrassed. :o

My undergraduate college had theater majors act the play out every year. I thought it was rather interesting. I think the play is great. It discusses a lot of issues that many people are hesitant to speak about. I believe it is a great learning experience and discussion piece.
