Keep in mind that the process is long and not as easy as wanting to bring a Tri Sigma chapter to campus. Long story short:
1) the campus/Panhellenic needs to decide to open for sorority expansion, 2) all NPCs are notified, 3) usually 2-4 sororities are asked to make presentations, and 4) one sorority is selected by the campus/Panhellenic. Multiple factors are considered, including housing, campus culture, alumnae involvement/numbers in the area, etc. It's kind of like going through recruitment in that both the campus and the sorority have to decide that they're a good fit for each other. Why do you want to start a chapter of this particular sorority? Why not join one of the existing chapters on campus (assuming there are some)? |
There are some good threads here about starting an interest group. As ASTalumna06 said above, there is a LOT that goes into starting a new chapter on any campus. But if you don't have a group of women who also feel that there is need for a new sorority on campus, then your efforts are moot.
While still keeping anonymous, maybe you could share with us if your school already has a Greek system, if it has more or fewer than say 5 chapters and if they have any sort of housing. Once there are houses involved you enter a whole new realm of difficulty. Also, if your school has local sororities that you want to take national, that is a whole different kettle of fish. If you are talking about a school with a large established Greek system and you think Tri Sigma would be the perfect next addition, frankly your opinion counts for squat. If, for instance, you think Tri Sigma should expand to Alabama, you can stop right now. They would already have considered it and for whatever reason have decided not to. But Greek systems around the country ARE expanding so it's not like you have no chance. I would probably just open your options to include any NPC sorority. Start by talking to your campus Greek advisor and find out what the possibilities are for expansion. Spending a few minutes getting a grip on the campus culture and openness to growth should either give you hope or put a nail in that coffin. Without his/her support, nothing is happening. |
Is there a reason you don't want to check out the other chapters on your campus?
