High School Sororities
 

I know some of you are also looking into this. I'm just looking for some defunct high school sororities and their geographical location and estimated years of operation. Thank you!!!

I have a PDF copy of the high school fraternity manual that was published in 1912. This was the high school groups version of the bairds manual.

It was written by J ward Brown., title "American Secondary School Fraternities".

Thanks! I'll have to keep a look out for that manual...there's none for sale online now but I'll search the libraries.

There were some national ones, mostly for Jewish girls. These are the Jewish ones:

Sigma Theta Pi
Lammies
Iota Phi
Iota Gamma Phi (or maybe Iota Phi Gamma, not sure which order)
Tau Epsion Chi (TEX)

Also, some of the SUNY sororities had chapters at high school, but these were short-lived.

Finally, several community sororities started in high schools:
Sigma Alpha
Kappa Kappa Sigma
Delta Theta Tau
Phi Beta Psi
Alpha Zeta Beta
Tri Kappa

In high school, I was a B'nai Brith Girl, which functions pretty similarly to a sorority for Jewish women. The counterpart for men is AZA, which indeed calls itself a fraternity.

ETA: Okay, according to the Wikipedia article, it is indeed a high school sorority. I can't find a good source on that, but we had open membership, so I'm not sure if it meets the strictest definition. It does, however, operate as local chapters under an international umbrella, and we claimed quite a few "famous BBG's."

There was a high school sorority made up of girls from private schools in New Orleans back in the 70-80's called Delta Beta Sigma. I had the impression it was mostly a sub deb club for West Bank girls but I might have been wrong.

There was a chapter of DBS in a school in Eastern Arkansas, when I graduated from high school in the early 60's. I moved there after Senior year started, so I am completely unfamiliar with anything about it. I had friends who were members, but I wasn't interested so they never talked about it.

My mom was in Beta Delta in the mid 50s in Monroe, Louisiana. I think it was founded in Arkansas.

DBS is indeed still active and to the best of my knowledge, has chapters in Tennessee, Arkansas, Alabama, and Louisiana.
