I am a Delta. I am also in (financial and active member of) Delta.
It is only as creepy, excessive, and obsessive as people make it. Saying I am a Delta doesn't make me an alien or demon spawn who has been taken over by my sorority. How I perceive and receive Delta has changed since I was a collegiate Soror. I now have a greater sense of self and identity than I (and most) had in my 20s. Yes, aspects of my identity changed when I became a Delta or it contextually changed. It is the same as anything else that even partly changes us once becoming a member. Some people may have considered me more fun or deserving after I became a Delta but that goes for anything that can shape people's perception of us. Nothing new. |
Is that really a thing?
I'm not a girl scout, I'm in girl scouts. I'm not an accountant, I work in accounting. I'm not Irish, I'm of Irish ancestry. People will define you by whatever they want. And if you don't fit their idea of that 'whatever' then you must be the exception to all the others out there. |
One of the best parts of college for me was no longer just being seen as someone's daughter. My parents were both very well known in our small town and while I love them dearly, it was dehumanizing to me to continually hear "oh, are you Dad33's daughter" and "you must be Mom33's girl. " Yes, I am, but I'm ME!! Not just their appendage. If someone referred to me as "33girl the ASA" that was different - I CHOSE that. If the author of this article thinks she can live her life without any identifiers and that will make her life better- doubtful.

DITTO From the moment I was inducted till' the end of time, I will be known as NinjaPoodle, the Sigma Gamma Rho. Period. It all goes back to every person who becomes a member has a different agenda and that reflects in the experience they have. |
I'm financial and active, and I think I've changed with age. But I don't believe the person I've change into good or bad has anything to do with my frat though.

I am a Theta and I am in Theta.
I am an attorney who practices law. I am a mother and stepmother. And further, I am Ole Miss. |
These UVA people must get occasional visits from Thomas Jefferson's ghost saying "THINK TOO MUCH ABOUT THINGS. "

What she was probably attempting to convey is that our GLOs should not drown us and make up our soul and being. What that means is subjective and there are cultural variations.

Oh, the existential angst of the college student. I remember well... |
And UVa has Eli Banana. And it's Mr. Jefferson.
