As though I wasn't scared enough of large bodies of water. :) As though I wasn't scared enough of sea creatures.

They just showed the popular video of orcas plotting against a seal.

They showed a clip of "Orca: The Killer Whale."

I like that the whale world is matriarchal. :)

Anyone else watching this?

They did a debate ridden after show and then re-aired. They will show it again on Sunday.

Director of Blackfish said, there are no records of any humans killed by Orcas in the wild. I find this amazing since we have been stealing their children.

I was disappointed to find out this isn't a Game of Thrones spin-off featuring Catelyn Stark's uncle, Brynden Tully.

So want to see it but it didn't come anywhere near here and I don't want to buy a DVD.

"Crossfire" was also about how Sea World sucks. The evening was devoted to Blackfish.

Yes, it did. I couldn't watch parts of it, but what I did see absolutely broke my heart. The pain in the screams of the moms after their offspring were taken from them made me so angry.

*bump* I watched it start to finish twice last night. I was heartsick.

Love the ocean, knowing that when I step into it, I'm not the top of the food chain. Not by a long shot. The orcas do not belong in Sea World or in any kind of captivity. We have aquariums - the Monterey Bay (CA) Acquarium was incredible, and so was the Birch Acquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography in San Diego. Is that not adequate? People want to be entertained, go to Disneyland.

I'm a dork so last night I looked at the elevated ceilings in my home and imagined the height of dolphins, orcas, sharks, and whales. Something that, if it stood upright, is much taller than my elevated ceilings isn't "cute". It can be beautiful and I can be awestruck but its ability to kill me removes the cuteness factor (just like people need to stop acting as though pandas and other bears are "teddy bears"...and I love elephants but I don't want to be too close to one.).

I don't love the ocean. I am terrified of it. I am afraid of large bodies of water, particularly if I cannot easily see and access the sides. I always need an escape plan. :)

Well, like I said, I love the ocean. Especially the Pacific. Loved my four years at UCSB. Love flying across the Pacific to Asia, walking on the coast, sailing. To each her own!

It's a metaphysical thing for me - being part of something much greater that cannot be seen. Never thought about an escape plan.

I do not anthropomorphize animals either. Tilikum weighs ~ 12,000 pounds. It is very difficult to grasp the size and power when you are seeing those orcas on a television screen.

Perhaps that also applies to this "large fish" thing. If there were ways to get these "large fish" in safe habitats and still allow humans to access them and enjoy them, would it still be cause for alarm? If the overarching issue is that humans need to leave these "large fish" the hell alone (most animals don't want to be bothered) then the same could possibly be applied to humans going to the ocean for things like deep sea diving and fisher boats that go far beyond the shore.

Exactly. There's a reason why they're called "killer whales". My boyfriend LOVES animals and any show relating to them. He got me into watching certain series with him (Planet Earth, North America, etc.) and on a few episodes, they would show the feeding/killing process of these animals. It was quite frightening.

One thing I learned that I didn't know before: they kill other whales. If a few orcas can hunt, kill, and eat a humpback whale, then I don't want to be anywhere near them.
