Ariel Castro, the Cleveland man who was sentenced to life in prison plus 1,000 years parole in July after pleading guilty to imprisoning and raping three women for a decade, was found dead, a prison spokeswoman said early Wednesday.

The 53-year-old convict was found hanging in his cell around 9:20 p.m. Tuesday at the Correctional Reception Center in Orient, officials said.

Although I wish he had suffered a LOT more, I have to have faith that he will get what he deserves in the after life.

^^^Ditto

SMH. I just went through the articles (again) from when the women were found. Just tragic all around. I'm upset about the whole thing all over again. I pray they have some peace.

Too easy. I don't blame him for preferring death over life in prison.

Y'all think it was really a suicide?

Maybe the better question is "Does anyone care if this was not suicide?"

I do. Whatever I think of Ariel Castro (and I suspect we all have strong feelings), that's different from how I feel about both our prison system and vigilante justice.

Mostly, though, I am concerned for his survivors. Ideally, they'll be left alone, but we all know that every major media outlet will be scrambling to get a comment.

I've tried to respond several times to this thread and nothing is coming out right. I'm certainly not sorry he's gone. I wish for peace for those poor women that he held captive. I feel sorry for his children, both the ones from his prior relationship and the one born in captivity.

I hope that he spent at least a little time feeling fear before he died. Not necessarily that whole prison justice scenario people talk about, but fear and dread for what lay ahead and then I wish he would have had to experience it every day for at least as long as he held those women.

In Dante's "Divine Comedy", there's a level of hell for people like this.

Amen to that.

His eldest son or daughter (can't remember who spoke) was quoted about a month or so back saying they wished to have nothing more to do with Castro.

It's likely media will leave his survivors alone.

He knew that he could never be placed in the general population. At best, he would be beaten; at worst, he would be raped or killed. My friends are mixed on what happened. Most say, it's a happy day. Many also say that he should have suffered like the three women.
And while some of you think you were footing the bill, he was in the state prison system, not federal. The people of Ohio were primarily picking up the tab.

The article linked above said he was in a cell by himself with guards checking on him every half hour. Unless his cell neighbors were ninjas or basilisks with hands, I'll agree with the coroner's suicide ruling.

I dunno. Maury Travis ( a serial killer) "committed suicide" in St. Louis County jail with his hands tied behind his back. He was on the same kind of checks.
