Rush chair point of view
Hey girls,
As formal rush chair for spring rush(which is less than a month away) I thought it would be cool to post rush chairs experiences leading up to and during rush. So far I am going crazy, with soooo much to do. Thankfully I finished the pictures for our video and had it made yesterday. I used the songs playground by Madonna and Living on a prayer(its a thing in my sorority) I am going to the craft store today to get some banner materials and decorations. If any other rush chairs would like to share their experience this semester just post it along:) GOOD LUCK TO ALL THE RUSH CHAIRS, I KNOW ITS A DIFFICULT BUT FUN JOB:) |
deltajas: Thank you for the wish of luck! I know that I'm going to need it! I'm the VP-Membership for my chapter, and our formal recruitment begins on January 24th. The dates are the 24th, 27th, 29th, and 31st. Like you, I am extremely overwhelmed, yet anxious to get the show on the road!
One of the worst parts of formal recruitment, from my perspective, is getting those invites back! (Us and the PNM's make cuts after the second parties) I will be sooooooo jazzed on a girl and maybe even "plant" positive comments for her (since I run voting and have no voice/vote)....and then she turns us away! :( To tell you the truth, I usually cry then say "Oh well, I didn't like ____ about her anyways." While untrue, it keeps me sane and focused on the girls who ARE coming back! I will definitely post my story on here because sometimes I need feedback from a group of people who are kinda removed from the exact situation. Another reason why recruitment is so exciting for me this year....we have a newly formed Graduate Council that helps us with the cost of the whole shabang! They are working their hindends off for us, and it's a huge relief. Sometimes I feel so guilty when I see my chapter struggling to pay bills when I know that such a huge chunk of the budget goes to me and my fanciful ideas. :D Sorry for this mother-long post...I just get sooo jazzed about recruitment!!!!! |
Well I think you will do great.
I know what you mean when you really like a girl, and she goes elsewhere. It even hurts more when you love a girl, and let's say your other sisters don't feel the same:( At the moment, after reading my sorority listserv, I am just working on coming up with some more chants(for when the rushees are outside the rooms) Yesterday I enlarged some photos, I'm going to make a silver banner with tons of 5x7's on it(for day two) I have to finish our skits and practice schedule. For day one we are doing an island theme, and then lead into Opposites Attract(Paula Abdul) But both parts will be female. I cannot decide whether to keep it with two main characters, or a lot of different sisters for different parts(The point of that song/skit is that we are opposite but the come together) When it says who would of thought we could be lovers(we are saying sisters of course)! And Im still debating the name tags. I cannot wait to get the video back to see it! I will post along, and of course I will find time after rush each day and night to let you all know how it is going from a rush chairs point of view! Love and sisterhood to all! |
oK SO TO UPDATE
I got the video back yesterday! IT IS AWESOME!!!!! I was laughing and crying, it was great. The only problem with that is that our pres, which is my friend, was not in it that much bc she did not give me any pictures. I emailed and told people weeks and months before the semster ended, and most people gace me a ton of great pics. I used what I had of her, but she does not hang out that much. I hope she does not get upset. Other than that it is soooo good. We got a really good deal too. For name tags I went with silver with black writing, I ordered them from a local engraving company. Im finishing up on enlarging a few more photos for a banner, for day 2. Around each picture I have glued on sorority ribbon that the local greek store sells with each sor. letters on it. Our practices start next thurs-Two a day! I have a question, for pref night, I was thinking of using wine glasses with our letters on them, with sorority ribbon with the girls name attatched(obviously ses the only one drinking out of it) And serving sparkling cider before the pref ceremony. What does anyone think about that? And Im excited bc I talked to my big last night, and her and a lot of the alumni are coming up to help us. Ok that is all for now, I wish rush would just start already! |
I think the sparkling cider is a good idea. And the ribbon is a nice touch. In my chapter we serve some kind of sparkling punch in champagne flutes (just plain no letters) and have the little cocktail napkins with our letters on them. It sounds like you are doing a great job. Good luck with everything :)

Ok so
OOHHHH MYYYY GODDD! Formal rush starts friday, I am soooo nervous. We have been practicing like crazy, and getting everything together has been such a strenous process! We got into a few fights last night, but I think it's all stress. Well we pratice tonight, so I will be back later, and you keep you updated. |
I'm looking foward to reading your posts. I have NO IDEA what a formal rush in spring would be like. What if there's a girl you know and just can't see in your house? How do you keep the "warmth" without getting her hopes up too high? I think on a personal level, this would be harder than the fall rush where a lot of girls are unknown. Since you've seen some of the girls, maybe on campus or dating friends, do you have an idea of how
it might turn out ahead of time? |

Kind of like sneaking a peak at a Christmas present??? That DOES sound like it would be fun.

Hey, this is my first post on GC! How exciting! Anyway...I was our VP Recruitment this past fall for our formal recruitment. And let me tell you I was STRESSED! I wish that I had started doing the display boards and all of that a lot earlier...but my sisters stayed up late helping out so it was fine. I was so nervous and scared, but all of my sisters and advisors told me that it was the best recruitment they'd seen yet. And you know what!? It all turned out great because we got quota plus 1! :D My best advice for all you recruitment chairs out there is to start early, because it sneeks up on ya! Good luck to you all! :)
