Proper Bar Attire

Ok, i got this idea from my shcoking thread and we all started talking about proper attire. I know that at my school there was certain stuff that you just didnt wear out to parties or bars. Well you could wear it but you'd be modded by the fashion police. So what were some things that were considered....UNACCEPTABLE ;)

At UM, if you wore jeans they had to be dark, ie, deep indigo or dark rinse, NO faded denim, stonewash or inbetween blue. Ill add more later

For guys, I'd have to say no gym shoes, unless you're a little quirky and they're cute, stylish Pumas or something, or you're a hot, steamy basketball player in tennies and a hoodie.

Styles of dress vary greatly from bar to bar, though, so what you can get away with at one might be completely unacceptable at another.

Things that don't stain easily. Think about it.

LOL, and don't absorb quickly. Wet and smelly, gross.
But really, the one thing you always do is cute and COMFY shoes, cause after 20 mins of dancing in those sexy strappy sandals, and you cant even walk anymore! I have the best pair of cute and sexy black sandals that are actually comfy!!

When I was in school the item you had to have for bar attire was what we referred to as "$5 all purpose party shoes." You know, the little flat sneakers they sell at Kmart and that you can throw in the washer? They were particularly useful for this one bar called the Roost, where you always ended up with "Roost sh!t" on your shoes - a mixture of dirt, beer and the red paint on the floor. A dive, but a fun dive.

Make sure your shoes have good tread on them. The floors at bars tend to be wet because of the drunk people who spill their beers on the floor. My big sis had an embarrassing moment one night when she really got into some song that started playing. Her high heels had no tread at the bottom and she ended up taking a complete nosedive into the floor.

We had a bar called the Cash Inn aka the Trash Inn. Years of beer and bar grime had accumulated on the floor, so we had Cash Inn shoes. They were old shoes that you didn't care about or those cheap canvas shoes that 33girl described. You could always tell who the freshman girls were by the fact that they were complaining that their new leather shoes were ruined. Also, you had to keep moving around or you would get stuck to the floor! :p

Thats why I love living in the south. No matter how nasty the floor of the bar, I can be in a buttown down, tie even, khakis, and my red wings (boots) never have to worry about them getting "yucky".

I agree with lifesaver and Tibi--the bars I go to in Atlanta seem to be a pretty preppy crowd. All the guys are in button downs and khaki's and the girls are in black pants and party shirts, but you don't see a whole lot of backless or glitter. And as for shoes, I have a GREAT pair of strappy sandals that I love to wear that stay comfy for awhile but there is one bar in ATL called Hole in the Wall that also has that same grunge that everyone seems to be talking about--and I have also been one to take the nose dive slide from it. Many a great pair of pants has had to be dry cleaned because of it. But pretty much everywhere else you can wear shoes and not worry about sliding. We did see this girl out last weekend, wearing a really cute sundress and strappy heels that would have been great in the middle of July--BUT IT WAS DECEMBER AND 20 degree's out. I think she must hav froze.

I have a girlfriend that is THAT girl....always in a mini skirt and skimpy top or a tiny dress. And it gets COLD here in Dec and Jan, and she would still wear that crap out. And of course us smart girls would be in pants and cute tops with sleeves. She always froze and guys would look at her like she was a freak. Needless to say, less clothing isnt always better!! And she is the one who is always spilling things on me, hence the 'absorbant clothing'.

I have a friend just like that it could be -30 outside and she would be wearing a skimpy little halter top and mini skirt??!! Now yes usually it can get pretty hot inside the clubs or bars or whatever but still I would usually wear a cute top and some cute pants so i didnt totally freeze and shoes are really hard to decide on b/c ppl are always spilling stuff all over the floors so my shoes usually got yucky I never wear open toed shoes lol my friend did once and some drunk guy spilled a beer all over her and her toes were all yucky all night!

Nichole

Maybe it's a girl thing but many of us would rather freeze our butts off than wear a fleece to a bar.
My freshman year, we had a social to a club downtown. It got down to about the high 40's/low 50's that night. My sisters were still wearing strappy shoes and halter tops. The line to get into the club was sooo long so they were all freezing outside for 20 minutes.
I know a lot of the Northerners would say "Bring a coat and drop it off at the coat room when you get to the bar." But, this is Florida. There is no such thing as a coat room in Florida.

valkyrie 01-04-2002 06:28 PM

ROFL. I think it is a girl thing. When I was in college in Iowa where it gets DARN cold, we would NEVER wear coats or jackets out to the bars. We would walk three or four blocks to the bars, freezing our butts off, figuring that by the time we were walking home, we'd be too drunk to feel how cold it was. There were no coat checks or anything, so you just froze rather than having to deal with a coat all night. Of course, I was in college back in the dark ages where we did carry purses -- I understand that that's not really done any more.

Couple of points...

As a wise friend once said, the last one who could get away with wearing glitter was the Christmas Card I made for my mom in 2nd grade.

Hey, I'll freze my ass off too instead of wearing a coat, but theres a DIFFERNCE between wearing a nice dark outfit thats trendy and a f*cking sundress/shorts in December. <let me introduce you to a good friend of mine, he's dying to meet you. His name is calendar> Theres this ATO we all know who thinks hes all abercrombie. Faded jeans, sweater and sandals. We look at him like hes an idiot - specially when its 30 degrees outside and his stupid ass feet are all pink from the cold. Note to IdiotHEY JACK ASS - Hope it rains today so you feet get wet too. Yeah, they all warm in the catalog, but you aint in the catalog fool boy. If you was, you wouldnt be at school here. Now go put on some shoes. We all laughing at you...right now.
