what do you do if there are no set rules for a sorority?
basically I was in (inactive) a local sorority on my campus that has no set rules. the ladies in the sorority do not follow requirements to stay in the sorority and are not dedicated members. it has gotten to the point (multiple times) when sisters have been threatened by other sisters and no action was taken to resolve the matter.
in a national sorority what would be the protocol for something like this? |

I suggest you all come up with rules and requirements. |
1) Write some bylaws which reflect your values and/or risk management policies.
2) Present those to your chapter and have them adopt the written rules. 3) Distribute copies of those rules 4) Part of those rules should include some sort of judicial body (standards/j-board/whatever) which will consider cases where sisters have violated rules and take corrective action. My fraternity (slightly different lane) imposes a maximum of 6 months suspension without taking the issue before the whole chapter. I doubt many sororities do that though. For expulsion, we have a very simple evidence code (hearsay is permitted, there are no rules of evidence), we have a trial procedure followed by 2 votes, one for guilty/not guilty, the other for or against expulsion. |
Personally, I would run, not walk, away from this situation. However, if you are not alone in wanting rules and standards, then work together with those who desire structure to put it in place.

If you are inactive, I doubt that you will be effective in changing the dynamic of the group. I'd suggest amIblue?'s first course of action.
