Local wants to be recognized on a National level
 

Greetings All!

Could someone(z) give me a bit of info as to just how a new local should go about developing a National sphere of their org without joining another org? Any info would help.

Lib, I can understand your ideas on this, but it is nearly immpossible in this day and age!

When i started a local, in 1965, it was with the intention of affiliating with a National!

I often look back and think, I wonder if I could have started a National! In retrospect, I can happily say, I am glad that I did not!

We help a local Soroity start on campus and backed them to the hilt. Well they had a chance to go Phi Mu and said NO we are the best! Well they were the best and no longer on campus!

In this day and age of Pol. Correctness and Risk Managament, Insurance, on on on,etc. I think you get the idea!

It may be best to try and find an National that best fits the beleifs and ideals that your Organization do.

Actually, I 'll have to disagree here with Tom E on this one. Many Locals have their National like councils, which holds up for all their regulations and procedures and etc .... I don't believe it's impossible to do, but many of the locals that participate in such a thing have more then one chapter.I feel as though anything is possible and if your willing to put your best foot forward and do the work then anything can be achieved, just like back in the day when Tom E. started his local, he had to start somewhere !

If you're talking about transitioning from a local into a national group...
 

...then I would have to be the voice of dissension and say it is possible - my sorority is the example I have to offer. The group just has to be very focused on its goals and ideals, and have a plan in place for expansion.

For example - what makes you unique? What can you offer that existing groups may not offer? How do your governing principles already fit so as to encompass more than a solitary chapter, and how might they need altering?

I might be misunderstanding Tom (only because my mind cannot always grasp his greatness, of course) -- but I thought he was saying that he thinks it's nearly impossible for a local to *become* national, not that it's impossible for a local to affiliate with a separate national organization that already exists. I understood him to be saying that it's hard for a local to expand to a national level without affiliating with an established, national organization.

I beleive you're asking if you can form your own National (or International) group as opposed to affiliating with an existing group.

No advice on how to do it - but I wish you the best of luck!

I talk a lot better than I type! Can You tell! I am saying, if you are a local and plan to try to expand as a National Organization, it is almost immposible. It may be easier to do today with the internet ist is still extemely hard!

You need to find other schools with people who think as you do and start a chapter there, and keep doing it. If you have say 25-35 chapters then you can be considered a National if you are in several states. International if you are in more than one country.

What I am saying, is if you are a local, it is easier to affiliate with a National that has the same Ideals and Principles that you have.:)

I am not knocking Locals as there are many around and doing very well! Today the Risk Management and Insurance cost that comes from it are very pro hibiative if you have a house. Building!

This is true, but insurance wise, our organization got a sweet deal for our chapters. If the people of an organization have the time and effort to turn a local into a national, then it can happen. BUT, there must be people willing to do what needs to be done in order for that to happen.

uhhh its not hard.

my organization did it. it just takes committment and hard work.

even though we already had chapters in several states for quite a few years.

Greeks run in cycles, LXA sis in the early 1900s as the Guys that started it started somethin new! The old lone did not expand much so there was a niche for the new!

Today many do not expand, LXA is like that and look at schools that are receptive to schools that want Greeks on campus.

I still look back in retrospect and wonder if Beta Chi could have become National?

If you do not go for it, you too will be wondering! I admire anyone who does their own thing and expands as it still makes the Greek Organizations Grow!

I really believe that it is possible....take my sorority for example....Our Founding Monarchs had a vision of establishing a mulicultural sorority on a national level without affiliating with any extablished organization. And I still can not believe to this day that their dream and mine is being fulfilled as I type. Theta Nu Xi Multicultural Sorority Incorporated was founded on April 11, 1997 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill....We just celebrated our 5th year this past April and I am extremely proud to say that we have 11 chapters and 2 colonies...ranging from Texas to Pittsburgh to North Carolina...to Utah...to Arizona....to Va.... and more......

NOt bad for 5 years don't you think !

You can go national, yes ... There are only 26 NPC chapters, 4 NPHC chapters and (I'm guessing here) around a dozen multicultural or ethnic-specific nationals that are members of neither. There are obviously more niches to be exploited.

(Sorry, I can't tell if you're talking about a fraternity or sorority ... and there are a lot more men's groups than women's.)

I'm not sure i your just tlaking about your particular school but there are actually 9 NPHC orgs....
