Catfish and Online (Lying) Dating

1.Did anyone watch the marathon? Wow. just wow.

2. Do you know anyone that this has happened to or did YOU do it?

Kevin 06-24-2013 01:19 PM

I didn't know that was a thing until Glee.

One of the podcasts that I listen to does a "Catfish review" and that's the only reason I really know about it. Can't say that anyone in my life has experienced it, though, as many of the folks that I interact with know that 2 years without meeting or at least talking is suspect.

So how about you just reject friend requests from people you've never met?

Pretty novel idea, right?

knight_shadow 06-24-2013 01:23 PM

Some of the "victims" in the Catfish games met people on POF/OKC/similar sites, but were tricked with phony profiles.

I don't have cable so I just found out about the show while visiting my sister. I have started watching last season's episodes online and......wow.

But, I keep watching out of hope that this time, this episode will have a happy ending.

A woman who posts on another forum that I visit used to talk a lot about a guy she'd met through yet another site. She even went to Venezuela twice to visit him and had bought him some expensive gifts. Then there came a time when she wasn't able to reach him, and after doing some detective work and contacting some friends of his, she learned that he wasn't a widower, as he claimed, but married.

I was catfished by a dude once who said he was afraid I wouldn't give him a chance if he used his real pictures. He was right. I don't do underdeveloped chins. This was like in 2004.

Prior to that, I was catfished by someone who wasn't even interested in me romantically. It's a very long story, but she had like five of us fooled.

Never been catfished but I do love the show.

My brother recently had a "catfish-like" experience... He ONLY goes by the shortened version of his middle name, never his first name.. (example: Thomas Robert Lastname..he would be Bob). All his life that's what we've called him.

So this girl he starts seeing (who isn't fully sane to begin with) confronts him and says "Is your real name 'Thomas'?" and he says yes... and she BLOWS UP and is screaming about how she sure is glad her sister can do "detective work" because she's been lied to this whole time (3 weeks) about his name!!!

Goddammit.

I've been "catfished" once. I only talked to this person via text for a month but once plan after plan to meet up fell through I put two and two together and stopped it. I've also had the fake pic/old pic trick used on me quite a bit in the past. All of my first meetings or "dates" are at Starbucks and I inform them that I can only meet for 10-15 mins because of my schedule. The reason being, if I show up and the person has an extra couple of chins and is 100lbs heavier IRL than online (it's happened to me) I can slam my Americano and get the hell out without being too uncordial.

Btw, what's an underdeveloped chin?

There was one that I saw that did. It was the one where they were sort of both catfishing each other. The girl was using pictures that weren't really of her, and the guy was trans. Once they met, the girl was okay with the guy being trans, and the guy liked her real appearance, and they were going to try to make it work in the long term.

^^^I'm watching that one now! I guess I know how it ends. :p
