3-day Coma: U VA Zeta Psi pledge (Soy sauce)

U of Virginia Zeta Psi pledge was "dared" to drink a large quantity of soy sauce; result: a 3-day coma. At least they got him to a hospital, and luckily he apparently suffered no permanent brain damage . . .

I heard about this a few days ago. They said "a college student prank" -- I was nervous there was going to be a fraternity angle brought up.

This would be a weird time of year for any hazing to actively be going on.

Sounds like a middle school dare . . .

AGDee 06-10-2013 05:59 PM

Although the article is from today, it does say that after a month, he was in classes and doing well on exams. They don't say when the incident was, but it was apparently a while ago?

Looks like I'm busted for not RTA :)

Well, and I lied... the article was from yesterday, not today...lol.

A linked article had this to say:

Quote:

John Paul Boldrick was 19 when he drank the soy sauce as part of an initiation to join the Zeta Psi fraternity house in February 2011. He ended up in a coma but survived with no lasting neurological problems, according to LiveScience.

"As part of an initiation" sounds like something the non-English-speaking spambots might say. At any rate, this occurred in 2011 and is only now making the rounds because it was apparently discussed in a medical journal.

Did he pass out because of the salt or the alcohol content? I'd guess the salt.

I believe that the fraternity was kicked off campus for a couple of years based on that, and perhaps, other incidents.

The young boy is now fine said in the end of article but the article didn't say if that young boy is back to his school.
