Michael Douglas' Throat Cancer Caused By Oral Sex, Not Smoking Or Drinking

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/0...n_3375500.html

^^ The article is related to HPV.

After I discovered that one of my partners from a decade ago now has HPV, I realized I (as a man, and just as a person) really had no idea what HPV was or that it even had complications for men. I literally had to call my friend who is a sexual health scholar (MPH) and have her talk me down off the ledge.

I think some people will think this article is salacious, but the fact is men need to know that they can/do/will carry HPV and that it has very real repercussions, including EFFING THROAT CANCER.

That's crazy. I am glad Michael Douglas came out about his HPV status.

That is awesome that he came out about it. I know when the vaccine came out there was attention put towards HPV, but it has died down a lot. It isn't that rare either and it often doesn't have symptoms until much later so it is easily passed on without knowledge to either partner.

A GC-er mentioned once that her fathers oral cancer was an HPV related one.

Maybe this sounds dumb, but I would expect more women to have throat cancer from HPV, as opposed to men...

I read on that great authority (Facebook) today that a lot of the gender difference in HPV is from the thinness of the woman's genital skin as compared to that of a man's.

While I appreciate Michael Douglas's candor, I can't help but wonder how Catherine Zeta Jones feels about this revelation.

I am not usually squeamish when discussing medical issues or STDs, but for some reason, every time I read or hear about this, I want to plug my ears and scream "na na na can't hear you!"

Yes. I know that makes me super immature. I'm not proud of it.

Something like 90% of people who've had multiple partners have some form of HPV. Most otherwise healthy adults ultimately do NOT get cancer from HPV, even if they contract a cancer-causing strain. New research (within the past decade) shows that the body can actually clear it, and often does within 2-3 years. So, if you read the full article, his wife even mentions that serious stress may have been a contributing factor, and it would be silly to rule out drinking and alcohol.

In conclusion, if you are in the age group for the vaccination, do it. If you are not, stop stressing out. The last thing we need in this world is less oral sex.

We're thinking alike...but hopefully more people will get vaccinated.

CZJ could have very well been the person who gave it to him.... not that it matters, it just seems odd to wonder what she thinks.

And at one point, people thought discussions about HIV/AIDS was TMI.

I was also thinking whether it was tmi that he publicly made the connection, or that the connection was being made in general. Although she never came forth to say it, it's likely that Farrah Fawcett's anal cancer was caused by HPV.

I was also surprised to learn that after 30, if a woman has had 5 normal paps and negative HPV tests, she can choose not to have a Pap smear for years!
