Vandalism and letters
...

You are absolutely right! This shows disrespect for themselves, and their Greek Organizations. It may seem cute but it is against the law and if the School wants to come down on them they can!! If a Greek Organization would get kicked of of a campus, just how stupid and moronic would they look!? I hope the members of GC know how this can look not only for the one or more groups who do this! Destruction of any kind is not very wise.

As a solution, I pose this idea -
At my school, which is a commuter campus, we have the different sorority and fraternity banners hanging in the caf. Then at the new dorms they are allowing us to hang some new banners in the rec room all year round. I'm sure that won't stop all vandalism, but with a campus like ours, where houses aren't around, it does help us get our name out. |
Carnegie Mellon had "the Fence" which took care of some of the tendencies. It used to be a wooden fence, but it had been painted by groups for so long it was no longer apparent as wood. It was in the middle of campus and was painted by student organizations on campus. Very strict rules on painting it, but the rules were largely unwritten and enforced by the groups themselves. It could only be painted between midnight and 6AM and the fence had to be held by a member staying at the fence until midnight. Only twice did the administration feel it was necessary to paint over what a group had done and one of those was when anti-france slogans had been done the night before the president of France was to speak at the school.

We have this thing at my school called the greek sidewalk. The majority of the houses on campuse usually paint there letters and have everyone sign it. Other than that we dont really have any probs with people painting on school propery.

My school is commuter campus too and we have these benches that all the GLOs get to use to paint their letters on. If I remember correctly, we had an event during greek week where we had a certin area of our campus quad were we could do chalk graphiti. But then again my Fraternity wasnt very active during greek week. Arm wrestling really stuck out in my mind. *L* Banners are big on our campus. We have them in our greek file room and in our student unions.
