UIUC Recruitment 2013 Questions

Hi
I'll be a sophomore next year at University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. I did not rush this year (my freshman year), but really wish I had. Will rushing as a sophomore make me less likely to get a bid? Is it a common thing to do?
Any advice?

Thanks!!!

It is a relatively common thing to do. You will be a bit less desirable but that doesn't mean you won't have options. Keep your mind open to every single sorority (don't bail if your favorites cut you), and presuming your grades are good and you have good conversation skills, other qualifications, etc., you should do fine.

A good number of sophomores rush, and typically get bids to virtually every chapter on campus. Obviously, your freshman year reputation will precede you, but sophomore status alone is not a deal-breaker.

In my experience at U of I, sophomores have a little bit harder of a time getting bids, but it is certainly not out of the question. As DubaiSis said, you definitely should keep you options open. I know you have heard tent talk of top houses/bottom houses by now--please put that out of your head. All chapters are amazing and being Greek at U of I is an AWESOME experience! Focus on the connections you make and what makes you happy. DBB makes a great point about reputation, too. Finally, I think one other really important factor, especially for sophomores at UIUC, is grades. I have found that sophomores with good grades have a much better experience with recruitment than sophomores with not-so-hot grades.

Do a search, and let us know if you have specific questions. lovespink88 and I have both posted UIUC stories in the "recruitment stories" forum, if that helps, though both are a bit old.

Ok Im African-American rushing phanellic do I even have a shot at getting a bid?

Yes. Be open to all of your options. There may be a few very last-century chapters at U of I, but many of them will be evolved enough to judge you on your merits and general coolness. Some will even relish the opportunity to add to their diversity. Figuring out which is which is the trick. Head high, be yourself, and let the chips fall where they may.

Ok are there alot of girls who dont get bids? or do pretty much everyone get a bid?

Illinois has a FANTASTIC document (look on their website) that spells out everything you ever wanted to know about cuts, drops, etc. for every round of rush. IF ONLY we could get the other schools to do this! It has been posted here on GC before. You might try a search through google or bing - the search inside GC is pretty useless.

UIUC Informal Recruitment 2014

I'm wondering if UIUC will be doing informal in the upcoming spring semester? I heard that they aren't because of the new sorority on campus, but I wanted to see if that was true or not. Thank you!
