Sigma Chi at Ole Miss suspended
Sigma Chi's Eta chapter at Ole Miss suspended.
Although the information below says the suspension is effective May 13, sanctions are apparently being imposed now. The suspension came during the middle of Derby Week, a huge philanthropy event involving all of the sororities on campus. Derby Day has now been cancelled. Sigma Chi response |
I was confused by the conflicting information in the University statement and the information in the press release from the chapter.
The press release from Sigma Chi said "The suspension includes no formal recruitment, no social activities, no housing, no meals, and no formal meetings will take place on the campus of the University. The suspension beings on May 13, 2013 and ends on January 1,2014." The inaccurate use of the word "beings" notwithstanding, this indicates that the suspension is not in effect until May 13, 2013. Doesn't make sense to me. |

Yes, looks like the Spring semester ends on Friday, May 10. I have found information in another publication that says that fraternity members WILL be allowed to live in the house through the end of the semester & meals will continue in the house, as well. It certainly makes little sense to kick the students out of the house with roughly 5 weeks of school to go.

It could have something to do with landlord/tenant laws, it could be that the housing corp is trying to incentivize the members somehow not to trash the house, etc.

Have really nothing to add except Derby Days was shut down very abruptly midweek.
|
A neighbor's son just initiated into the Eta chapter, having pledged in the fall. A shame Derby Days was halted, given the charitable organization (s) that benefit from it. There sure are a lot of suspensions these days -- seems like I read about one every week.

Makes you wonder when these folks are going to get the message, doesn't it?

If you see the bad stuff that actually hits the news then you can understand why they try to short circuit the bad stuff, and make a chapter an example for others to avoid. Having a working standards function in a chapter, that actually enforces and maintains standards, is invaluable.

Sigma Chi's 2 year suspension has been lifted. Instead of the suspension, the chapter will be on social probation for a year.
Now, if they can make sure that the members don't do anything stupid to violate the probation, they will be set. http://www.hattiesburgamerican.com/a...-after-hearing |
