Psi Upsilon at U of Michigan: Pledge Hospitalized, Alcohol, Suspension

The Psi Upsilon chapter at the U of Michigan was “expelled from the school's greek life council and suspended by its national office after a pledge was hospitalized for over-drinking . . . ."

I'm impressed at how quickly Tom responded to this, but it makes sense considering how serious it was.

This is sad, and scary. Their reputation was stellar when I was a student. Some of my pledge sisters and I did get thrown in the showers when we tried to nab their composite one night. We almost got away with it, but they caught us in the entry way on our way out. This was a Michigan tradition back in the day...steal a fraternity's composite and they'd have to come serenade your sorority to get it back. Get caught, and you got put in the shower (fully clothed, of course).

:( I liked Psi U a lot during my UG years--our cofounder had several high school friends there and a close friend of mine ended up marrying a brother. I've heard that they've been headed downhill for awhile though--there were some drug allegations as well, but I'm not sure if anything was proven.

I'm not sure what kind of message the school and the HQ are trying to send here. Take members to the emergency room when they look like they're in bad shape and 100% get kicked off of campus. Have someone stay up with them and try to avoid the hospital scene? In most cases, the kid's fine and you don't lose your charter.

I can understand if this is the organization and school's response to systematic hazing involving alcohol, but if this is just some dumb kid who got ****faced and his brothers did the right thing and took him to the hospital, the school and organization are potentially sending the wrong message.

Sciencewoman 03-24-2013 06:18 PM

^^^ I agree.

PhiAlpha05 03-24-2013 07:41 PM

^Also agreed. I'm almost certain there was other stuff going on and that this was just the icing on the cake [removed everything after "as I heard," please refer to the policy about posting rumors.

I want to preface this by saying this is pure speculation on my part.

That being said, I don't think that they would have been suspended unless there was a pattern of risky behavior. That being said, the fact that they broke a law that could easily have turned into a manslaughter case by providing massive qualities of alcohol to a minor might have something to do with it.

This article states: The council says the chapter was expelled Wednesday for "recurring safety violations and poor risk-management."

So, while not mentioning specific rumors or incidents, I'd say that line implies this was not a one time event.

I guess it really is true that some orgs try to make it off like they are "hardcore" when it comes to sending their members to the hospital... I never seem to get it, does it impress girls?

Psi U MC Vito 04-01-2013 11:56 AM

Huh? Where did you get that from?

Kevin 04-01-2013 11:58 AM

I hadn't read that anywhere either. Please substantiate this information or take it down. We do not speculate in RM threads. Especially those in which there are active criminal cases going on.
