Does anyone know...

I was wondering why the Gamma Phi Beta chapter at Vanderbilt University was closed. Did the chapter get in trouble with the university or have low numbers? My friend who goes to Vanderbilt, doesn't seem to know the answer!

GamGirl: I had a similar problem. I heard through the rumor mill that two KD chapters shut down. The best way I found to get answers was to find a chapter member on AOL.

Along the same lines, does anyone know why the Tri-Sigmas are no longer on Duquesne's campus? I posted on their board but haven't received a reply. I don't think people check the letter specific boards as much as the general ones......

I know the KD's closed at Pitt St Ks because of low numbers! Never figured that one out yet! At one time in their short span had 50 members!

Tom: Yeah! I saw that in The Angelos... They colonized in 1997...and handed back their charter in 2001! Craziness...

Pitt State & Emporia State have 2 of the biggest ASA chapters. I could never figure how they got so huge, till I saw there were only 3 NPC groups at each school.

As far as the other chapters & why they were closed, try emailing SSS and G Phi B's headquarters directly.

Sometimes, when a chapter closes, things tend to be kept sort of hush-hush. My chapter closed and then reorganized a few years ago, but we (the second incarnation of the chapter) weren't given very many details of what happened to the old chapter and when we asked, we were simply told that the old one wasn't "performing up to standards." I guess that means low numbers, but rumors have been flying around since then...supposedly, someone hid all the recent composites and scrapbooks of the old chapter from us so that we wouldn't see them, and I read somewhere that the members who were made to go alum were instructed not to interefere with the new members. I don't know if this is true or not (it's probably mostly false), but I get the impression that some things are being glossed over. There was an article in the local paper (appearing on the first day of rush last fall, of course) about how some of the former actives are suing nationals, and that was the first we'd heard of it. So you might have some questions that will never be answered.

Achtung....wow! That is really kind of not fair! I mean, those sisters may have not been "meeting the standards," but they are your most recent alum!

I'm personally very sad b/c one of our chapters closed and it was the geographically closest to my chapter. These girls were wonderful with helping us out! When our chapter house got a leak in one of the closets and ALL of our ritual equipment was ruined, they were more than happy to let us borrow theirs. They were just sweet girls all around, and I can't believe that they are gone.

How sad to be an alum at 20! =(

Achtung...I found the newspaper article you mentioned. Recolonizations (the sort with the previous incarnation of the group still on campus) are very rarely a nice business, unfortunately. The new alums are upset, and the actives get blamed for something that really is not their fault.

Ask your national for a list of all the alums (or find them through old yearbooks) and try reaching out to the alums who got caught in the undertow, so to speak. Let them know that the current actives do not view them as a liability, but as an asset. No matter what, they are still your sisters, and it's great to see that you care about that. Opening up the lines of communication, at least on your level, might go a long way towards healing some of the wounds.

I have heard of national (yes, it is national, not nationals...there is only one national for each group...) going into a situation and giving the members alum status and then reorganizing the chapter with new members. This is what I have heard called "Housecleaning" and it supposedly happened to the Sig Ep chapter on my campus right before I got here. I have heard of it happening other places too. Sometimes it happens when the sorority can function on that campus, but the members have run it into the ground, as in multiple members having judiciary hearings, out of control finances, a chapter full of bad apples, etc. They feel that there is still a market for that org. and so they reorganize it from the ground up as a means of restablishing with a fresh and strong foundation. Sometimes that doesn't pan out though.

That's exactly what mine did.
