UCF: Sigma Chi and AEPi Have Been Suspended

UCF
Two fraternities have been suspended at U of Central Florida (UCF). Besides the suspensions mentioned below, the fraternities must take other actions.

Sigma Chi -- organizational suspension through the end of Fall 2016; during this time, the fraternity will not be recognized by UCF.

Alpha Epsilon Pi -- organizational suspension through Spring 2014. Following this one year suspension, the fraternity will be placed on disciplinary probation for Summer and Fall of 2014–meaning all activities by the fraternity must be alcohol free.

The above are summaries and extracts from a posted news report at

Update: Lambda Chi Suspension at UCF

A third fraternity, Lambda Chi Alpha, has also been suspended, though it looks like its suspension may be a little shorter than those of the other two.

I wonder how this will affect Greek Life at UCF as a whole. It can't be good. I have a few friends who were thinking of rushing Lambda Chi or AEPi, but now they prob won't go Greek at all.

It's only three chapters, and not the entire Greek System. Other fraternities will have an opportunity to take members who would have otherwise rushed those groups. (Except of course for those who have already decided they would rather forgo the entire experience if they can't be in a chapter that was just suspended for alleged hazing and alcohol violations...)

The UCF Greek System will go on with or without those chapters. Perhaps now that they are cleaning house, UCF will resume Greek social activities and recruitment for the fall.

If I am correct there is nothing there that states the chapters cannot perform their own recruitment.

I was referring to the prior all-Greek suspension imposed by UCF.

Wow, this makes me thankful that my school (viewed as unsupportive of Greek life) has not taken to suspending all Greeks after our own few unfortunate events with fraternities. Looks like IFC brought in a lawyer for the undeserving chapters grouped into the suspension. Smart on their part.

Historically, UCF has been very supportive of Greek Life and has fostered a very pro-Greek environment. The university has experienced unprecedented growth over the past 15 years, moving from a traditional commuter school to the largest university in the country by enrollment. More and more GLOs have been added to support the demand for Greek Life, and the campus culture has changed as the university has expanded. I think UCF behaved rashly by suspending Greek Life in the manner in which it was done, but I also think the university was doing its best to support the organizations and ensure their longevity through the school's growth spurt. I look forward to seeing the unoffending GLO's going back to business as usual soon.
