Movies/books that scared the "bejeebers" out of you.
 

The movies that really freaked me out, and really scared me were "Misery", "Devil", "Amityville Horror" (the original one), "Holloween 2", and "Knowing".

The only book that really, really scared me that I read, was a book from a series of short stories by Stephen King --"Uncle Otto's Truck" --talk about really creepy? Read that one.

I don't equate blood and gore with scary. Gore is cheap and gross, not scary. For true scary movies, I liked:
"Signs" starring Mel Gibson. Written and directed by M. Night Shymalan. It was funny, sad, charming, touching, and SCARY as heck. Schmaltzy ending, but I'm OK with that.
"The Changling" with George C. Scott and Trish Van Devere, 1980. No gore, no guts, no blood. I saw it at the theater in 1980, and I'm still scared. I don't think it has ever been shown on television. For a long time, it wasn't available for rental or purchase, but I think it is out on DVD now.

I saw "It" as a kid and still find clowns creepy.

Books: Stephen King's The Shining. And that was after seeing the movie.

Movies: Blue Velvet. A few days after seeing it (on the road for work, in a hotel room), I walked in a store and "Blue Velvet" came on the store's stereo. I turned around and walked out.

Seven and Play Misty for Me. Seven was pretty bloody and gory and very weird but good. Play Misty for Me - old Eastwood film - just scared me to death for days. Jessica Walters coming from behind that screen with butcher knife - ooh!

I am a huge horror fan and "The Changling" is hands down (IMO) the best haunted house movie ever made and trust me when I say I've seen them all.

Scared in a different way...Clockwork Orange and Requiem for a Dream. RFAD is the one movie that after watching it, I've had to sleep with the lights on because I was so freaked out. There is not enough $$$ on earth to make me watch a minute of either of these ever again.

The movies that still make me jump even though I know better are Signs (the alien at the birthday party), Blair Witch Project (the end) and Carrie (ditto).

Heh, my sister to this day refuses to have one of those pine tree car freshener thingeys!

The Exorcist scared me ishtless and that was on network television. I can't even imagine in a theatre or on cable.

Also,Stephen King's "Salem's Lot". (the book) In fact, now that I think about it, I'd like to re-read that one!

Two books freaked me out: "Rosemary's Baby" and "The Exorcist". Yes, the movies were creepy, too, but reading those accounts of the devil at work really make me jumpy. It didn't help that I read both late at night! I remember being in the middle of "The Exorcist" and CHOOSING not to get out of bed and walk across the room to turn off a desk lamp. Who knew what lurked under that bed, let alone who--or what!--might have been in the closet!

Oh my....

I am not a horror film fan.....psychological thrillers? *Those* get to me.

That being said....

Rosemary's Baby...I was a kid and I didn't see all of it, but you will never, *ever*, see me watching this movie, if I am surfing tv and I see anything remotely related to this film, I turn it, I can just tell its Rosemary's Baby...Heck the SOAP storyline with Corinne's baby...I can barely get through those and I love SOAP.

I wasn't creep'd out by clowns until after I read Stephen King's It....

Also, The Ring (US version).....I could watch it again, but who would want to?

I these are the only ones that come to mind. I can deal with blood and gore, its the other shit that freaks me out.

I read The Exorcist in one day sitting on the pier at my parents' lake house! Got a great tan and was riveted to my beach towel. Didn't scare me but I was raised Catholic so that sort of creepy priest, etc was not foreign to me.

See, I think being raised as a Catholic made it even scarier for me than it would have been otherwise because I was, if not taught that all that stuff is real, not taught that it WASN'T!

I sort of want to read the Exorcist, but I'm honestly afraid I will be afraid to be by myself afterward!

Shortly after I moved into my house after my divorce, I had just broken up with someone and really wanted to see a movie. I decided it was time to go see a movie by myself. I thought Signs looked great. So off I went, to a 9:30 pm movie, by myself. Really. Stupid. Idea. Not only was I scared to go in the house when I got home, but it was also deep and emotionally charged and I was pretty vulnerable at the time. That movie... I still love it, but watching it alone that first time..ugh.

The first movie that scared the crap out of me was that babysitting movie... When a Stranger Calls, the original, in 1979. I watched that while babysitting. REALLY. STUPID. IDEA.

OH! And there was a movie that used to be on a lot when I was a tween/teen. It was called The Omega Man. I don't remember a lot about it, but it used to really scare me.
