First BGLO Probate

Let me start off by saying I am not a member of a BGLO, so what I have to say is purely from an outsiders somewhat naive point of view. Last semester I went to my first probate. I didn't know what to expect, but I got a small idea of what being a brother/sister of a BGLO means to them. About half-way through the probate a young man who looked to be about 20 or so broke down and started to cry. I wondered why he was crying so I talked to a family member who is a member of the same fraternity and he told me how much being a brother meant to him. I then began to understand why BGLO members speak with such pride when they describe their organizations. This young man had taken a major step in his life. He probably worked just as hard or harder for that than anything else he had done in his life. As his brothers from not only our campus but others as well made a circle around him and the rest of his line brothers and sang their fraternity song, I finally saw that being in a BGLO isn't just about stepping or wearing your letters, its about a bond you create and have for a lifetime, and even though I am not a member of a BGLO I was proud to witness that event.

yes, seeing a coming out show is a beautiful thing, whether you're in the organization or not. thank you for sharing.

What is probate? I can't tell, but it doesn't seem like something similar to anything non-BGLO groups have.

Just interested!

a probate/coming out show has it's origins in the earlier days of greek organizations when the pledges, usually a week before crossing but sometimes all through plegeship, would come out on the yard (campus) dressed in their pledge uniform & perform songs/skits/steps for the members & on-lookers. today, the concept is the same, but the timing is different. a probate/coming out show is done right after (usually that night or the next afternoon) the pledges have been formally initiated into their respective organization. it's usually (hopefully) the first time the general public sees who's become a member of what and it's also the first time the new members get to wear 'nalia. after the main show is over, the members, seasoned & newly initiated, sing songs & chants.

**seriously considering compling a "greek-to-english" dictionary**

Its AMAZING what a search will do, see I got a flyer about a few NPHC orgs were having a get together and the last line of the flyer said, "the new members will probate at 8:13 sharp." I had no clue what that meant, so instead of Posting a new question, I DID A SEARCH. Lo and behold, I found what I was looking for. The miracle of the search button. Alas, behold the beauty. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

Today, 2008, pledging, hazing is so bad, I don't believe they do steps anymore. It's a gang mentatality with intimidation and such. The new members just want to be done. Instead of preparing for a probate show, the BGLO's focus on violent behavior. Everything is so secretive and "lines" are prohibited so if they come out the next day with a show, it would be evident that there was a "line". It's a sad day for BGLO's.
