Dog owners: Trifexis
Have any of you dog owners used Trifexis? I definitely want to switch my dog over to it, and wondered if you knew of a reasonably priced website? I usually buy from CanadaVet, but they don't carry it (and seem to have stopped carrying Comfortis, which is made by the same manufacturer). I will buy from my vet as a last resort (they have highly recommended it).
For those of you wondering, Trifexis is a monthly flea (same formula as Comfortis, which is a godsend if you ever have fleas!) and heartworm preventative for dogs in one pill. |
I run a dog rescue and have used Trifexis quite a bit since Sentinel/ Interceptor was pulled. It does a good job & I have no personally had any dog develop a reaction to it.
I will offer a word of caution about buying over the Internet though. DON'T DO IT!!! There are SO many fake produts on the Internet. You have no idea if the meds that you buy are real or fraudulent. Heartworm meds are nothing to mess around with. Heartworm treatment is scary, very difficult for the dog and extremely expensive if you get a batch of bad prevention. FYI, if you buy your heartworm prevention from your vet consistently & your dog does develop any of the worms prevented by the medication, your vet can "go to bat" for you with the drug manufacturer. They will pay to treat your dog for whatever worms (heartworms, hookworms, whipworms, etc.) However, if you buy off the Internet, your vet can do NOTHING for you. Many vets will match an on-line price. I routinely search for lower prices & bring the lowest to my vet. She matches it without question. Hopefully yours will do the same. |
We use Revolution that covers heartworm, fleas, and ticks. It's topical and we put it on the base of their neck.

We also use Revolution.

Thanks. I'm looking for a website that sells Trifexis, but I've used Revolution before. I don't like the topicals personally, but I do like that it combines flea and heartworm.
I will keep searching for sites that sell Trifexis for a reasonable price, and I appreciate it if anyone has a recommendation for such a site. |
Prices for heartworm meds change all the time. There is no one site that will be the cheapest every month. 1-800-PET-MEDS is usually one of the more expensive sites.
I don't know if any of you that use Revolution are open to another opinion, but I very strongly discourage the use of Revolution. In my experience, it is not as safe or effective as any of the ORAL heartworm prevention. It does nothing for hookworms, roundworms, or whip worms, some of which are transmittable to people from dogs and are microscopic. These intestinal worms are easily picked up by dogs on walks or at the dogpark. It does treat for ear mites and demodex mange... but why treat for those when you know that your dog does not have them? |
I just switched to Trifexis after my first ever bout with fleas. So far there has been no reaction. My dog will not take pills even if I try to put it down his throat. Interceptor was easy to hide in peanut butter or a piece of bread. I have to crush this one up and mix with peanut butter.

I have resorted to making a "meatball" with wet food (I use Wysong) and the pill to mix up my dog to take it. Comfortis is supposedly chewable, but her Highness doesn't like it. ;) Greenies also makes Pill Pockets, which gave me the inspiration for the meatball!

i always check 1800petmeds.com for their current sales price. I print it to take to my vet, who price matches it.

Another suggestion: I've bought some pet meds at Costco, and have heard that WalMart might be a good source for some meds. One of my Belgians has Valley Fever (Coccidioidomycosis), and I get the antifungal med (Fluconazole) at Costco for far less than the vet clinic's price. Sometimes even Walgreens or a compounding pharmacy will have a good price. I get the script from the vet, and then spend a little time on the phone calling around, as well as checking internet websites for prices.
