Here Comes NEMO!
I'm all settled in, watching the snow start, as I'm in the projected 30"+ area. There seems to be a ton of hype for this storm. I wasn't alive to remember the blizzard of 78, but I'm mostly just going to be annoyed and cold if I lose power again. I'll also be annoyed at lack of water and ability to flush toilets. Time to bundle up and get ready to shovel snow half my height later today and tomorrow (I knew I should have remembered to get snowblower fixed). My Sigma Kappa crest cross stitch is ready to go by flashlight.
Anyone else ready for Nemo? |
I'm in the 30+ area too! But I don't have much to get ready for. The best place to be during a blizzard is your dorm with a dining hall on the first floor, so you never have to set foot outside. Also it doesn't suck too bad that said dorm is in a city, so you don't have to shovel your driveway or clean off your car.

When did they start naming winter storms? And why?
Stay safe and warm, folks. |

I think this is the first year, though "Nemo" doesn't exactly inspire blizzard like fear.... Maybe they are going for Disney themed names....? |

Seems to me that tags like "blizzard of '78" worked just fine, but they didn't ask me. |
I know it's wrong, but I'm jealous of not being in an area with a lot of snow.

The weather channel did it.
The Weather Channel announced Tuesday that they planned to start naming winter storms, similar to how the National Weather Service names tropical systems. Why? "-Naming a storm raises awareness. -Attaching a name makes it much easier to follow a weather system’s progress. -A storm with a name takes on a personality all its own, which adds to awareness. -In today’s social media world, a name makes it much easier to reference in communication. -A named storm is easier to remember and refer to in the future." They are actually all mythical names.. gods, goddesses, etc. Very funny article about it here: http://mediadecoder.blogs.nytimes.co...rm-named-nemo/ |
Best of luck to everyone in the affected areas, stay warm and safe!

Me too! |
Storm of '13 doesn't quite seem... scary. It comes off as a story my grandmother would have told.
Says the girl who has seen one or two flakes this year, but has snow tires on her car. |
Mandatory road closings in MA declared by Governor Patrick. All non emergency personnel must be off all public roads by 4pm. Nemo is gettin' real. (Though so far I have maybe 1")
Let's trade, y'all can come check out the snow from my house (which loses power like it's the house's job), and I'll go lounge somewhere warm! |

I think we're only getting 2-4 inches of it. I can live with that. :)

My mom was to fly to Puerto Rico with a layover at JFK...today. Womp womp. She's now leaving tomorrow, flying direct to San Juan.
ETA: I had to laugh at the some of the first storms named this year--"Draco" and "Luna". I wondered if we would get Harry, Ron, Hermoine, Snape, etc. :) |
