Hang-outs
I want to know where all of you hang-out( to use the antiquated term). What bars and clubs do you hit for a night on the town? Where do you shop? :p
There are plenty of people from large cities (LA) and small towns so I think it would be pretty interesting to detail where the "places to be" are. (this thread has been inspired my by trip to America's Pub and Have A Nice Day Cafe in St. Louis in less than 6 hours. I'll post my hangouts soon ...) |
Definately Have a Nice Day Cafe here in Milwaukee.
Well, the main scene for all those at all the universities in Milwaukee is downtown on Water Street. Basically the "bar district of town." Endless places to go, bars, clubs, little juke joints and all that good stuff. But, there is also a lot to do down by the Summerfest grounds, if any of you have heard of that. Lots of bars and clubs and other kewl little places to go down there also. d |
There is a Have a Nice Day Cafe here in Dallas too that I have heard about and want to go to...but the place to go(for me anyway) is anywhere in Deep Ellum or Red Jacket in Dallas and City Streets in Ft Worth.

Have a Nice Day is a big hang out here in Orlando too.

My St. Louis "hang-outs:"
Have a Nice Day ( I love 80s anything and its a blast dancing to Cyndi, Bon Jovi etc.)), BAR St. Louis (can be fun when its not so dang crowded and you can dance on top of the bar! I never thought I'd get up there, but I did), Americas Pub Incahoots and Wild Country (country bars in the city where I have line danced since just out of high school.) We have three areas we hang out, well four. First "Laclede's Landing" is right downtown and is home to a collection of bars. Sundeckers and Morgan Street are probably where we hang out the most because they are pretty kickback. Then we have the Central West End, near Forest Park, its a real cute area of shops and outdoor cafes. And their is a club called MP O'Reilys thats a blast - pretty laidback. Then there's Westport/Riverport, which is a collection of nightclubs and eateries. Dave and Busters is located near here( I love this place if any of you have not been to one imagine a Chuckee Cheese for adults!). Then there is the UCity Loop (UCity is the home of Nelly) where alot of good bands play. Again there are cute restaurants and vintage shops here. For troopers, there is the OZ which is the night club located near East St. Louis that is open till 5 a.m., the crowd from the landing often ends up here on weekend nights. Alot of transcendental and techno music here. |
Red Rock on Sunset most of the time. Too often apparently, the bartenders know my name. But hey! I am addicted to their club sandwich! Its a good crowd. A bit older (mid 20s-mid 30s), not too too hollywood pretentious, more rock-n-roll. :)
Barney's Beanery strictly as an after work with co workers thing. Senioritas on Sunset - a new one but very cool. Balboa at the Grafton. Also a new one but cool. :) Amy |
In Lincoln the bars are all on "O" street, and in the Haymarket - Old Chicago (the pizza place) as well as Buffalo Wild Wings get there share of college students eating on weekends and of people on Bar Crawls. There are also places like Barry's (which Sports Illustrated rated as the best pre-game party spot in the nation).
In Kansas City, the obvious place is Westport - a lot of bars and restraunts. Also the Plaza is very popular for the under 21 crowd, especially for dates around Christmas when the lights are on (If you've never seen the lights on the Plaza in Kansas City youre missing a spectacular sight - just ask Tom Earp, he'll back me up on that) and then also for dinners before things like HS Proms and Winter Formals. I know that occasionally the Betas at Kansas State (usually pledges) will organize a trip with the freshmen of a sorority to KC for the lights and food and Ice skating. More specific to my suburb of KC, there are a couple of night clubs that have Teen nights, and those were popular for a while, as was the under 19 "Studio 2000" but those seriously dropped off in popularity when the 14 year old girls started showing up "looking like a predator". |

In SA..
After intramural football games, its always Hills and Dales, a biker bar behind campus with the best selection of beer in town.
After chap meetings, or on the occasional weekends, its Baker Street - complete dive bar, but the place to hang out. Theres the TAP - It withthe 25 y.o. crowd, everyone who just graduated and has a new job. Funny, because everyone there is greek, and we used to compete against each other in Greek Week, or serve on IFC together. We joke how its the PHC/IFC Alum assoc. Theres Fox & Hound, which is for the people who just graduated, but dont have a job yet. We call it, "I've Graduated, now what?" For a night on the town we head downtown; Theres Zinc - Champaign and Wine bar, real popular with all the media (newscasters/reporters) and so very trendy, it doesnt even have a sign. They also sell pre-embargo cuban cigars there. My fav get messed up in a hurry drink is there: Cure-All, Midori, Chambord, Champaigne and Pineapple Juice. Howl at the Moon - Piano bar. Spent many a tuition check there. Know all the staff and love the hookup I get there. Swigs - Martini Bar down from Howl. Trendy as well. Polly Esthers - If in a dancing mood. Mad Dogs - Most generous shots in town. Great 80's music. On the riverwalk - can sit and watch the tourists walk by and try to guess where they are from. |
Annapolis, MD hangouts...
Lots of good places here, if you don't mind being hit on by 21 year-old midshipmen. (of course, most of you ladies are around that age so maybe you WOULDN'T mind! But I'm old so I just want to say "hey, don't you have a mom???" but anyhoo.....)
There are a few places my girlfriends and I hit on our "girls night out". Griffin's, Armadillo's and Riordan's are lots of fun and have good food, too. All right near the City Dock and within walking distance of each other. Armadillo's also has live music; usually the bands are pretty good. A little further outside of town is Surfside 7, which reminds me of a beach bar. It's right on the South River and people can just pull up in their boats and dock there. Actually, there are a lot of bar/restaurants like that around here. Another interesting place is Cancun Cantina. It's a huge club with country/western music on one side and regular dance music on the other side. A couple of times a month they actually have live bullriding. Lots of mullets and muscle shirts though, which can be a drawback. That's all I can think of right now, I don't get out all that often! |
During this winter break I haven't been scheduled to work as much, which is cool because I've been making good use of my free time. Here's what we do in Hawaii:
Compadres -- Taco Tuesday. My ex got me hooked on this. It's $1 Tacos and $2 Coronas and Margaritas all night. We usually go there at 4 because by 5 it gets CROWDED and people usually don't have any luck getting a table. Hard Rock Cafe -- every Wednesday night, one of of the major local surfing labels, *SPLIT*, sponsors *SPLIT* night, and the gates of hottie heaven open and the place is FLOODING with surfers! Again, the drink specials include cheap Coronas. Every once in a while HRC's also the location for a lot of the surfing parties. Last week, the Triple Crown just ended so that place was PACKED! It helps that we know one of the buyers for Town and Country...so me and the gals are always on the VIP list. Not that I'm trying to be big headed or anything...but it's a good feeling not having to wait in line or pay to get in. Oceans -- Thursday night. Oceans is usually a 23+ club, but on Thursday nights (and some special events) it's 21+. This is by far the meatiest meat market club there is, IMO. Coronas again are always on special! I've been brave enough to get up on the bar counter and dance (it's tradition to do it at least once if you go). Some of the guys are raunchy as hell because they're over there bringing out dollar bills when the girls go up...so I've always known NOT to wear a skirt. The lines are always long for this place. Mai Tai Bar and Dave and Busters -- Friday night. I'm sure some of you are familiar with D&B since it is a national chain and all. D&B just opened in Hawaii last Halloween and I've been hooked to that place since I visited D&B for the first time in Irvine. That Cash Roulette game is addicting, and I don't know how many tickets I've won just playing that game. It's pretty sad when we'll go up to the bar and the bartenders already know what we want to drink. The Mai Tai Bar is a bar that's right in the middle of Ala Moana Shopping Center. If any of you have ever been to Hawaii, I'm sure you know of Ala Moana. It's pretty busy especially on Friday nights when they have Pau Hana Happy Hour from 4-11 (awesome hours, huh?). We usually go because our friends play in a band there every once in a while. Pipeline Cafe -- Saturday night. Another 21+ club. I prefer this place over Oceans because of the larger dance floor. CORONAS ARE NOT ON SPECIAL HERE...GRRR... Still, loads of hotties frequent here on Saturdays. Friday nights at Pipeline are Soljah Nights where they play reggae music...but we try not to go here on Fridays because of an unfortunate incident with a fraternity brother. Long story. Tuesday nights at Pipeline are Dollar Drink nights, so it gets packed then, too. Brew Moon -- Sunday night. Brew moon is a restaurant/brewery that has a local touch to it. They convert it to a club at night and there's a theme every night after 9. Sunday nights are hip-hop nights, and I think Sunday's the best day to go. **Keep in mind that even if I've listed something to do for every day of the week...it's very rare that we do all of this, with the exception of Wednesday and Friday nights. What's too bad is that these places are all 21+ places, and if you're not of age here, there's not too many things you can do. I remember not being of age and there were lots of stuff to do and places to go to...but I've noticed that 18+ clubs and hangouts are getting more and more scarce. |
Although I have been out of school for a few years, and going out usually involves going with my husband and other couples-- we will head to Westport in Kansas City. Westport has a ton of bars within just a few block area. The bars also include America's Pub and Have a Nice Day Cafe (which many of you have mentioned also) we usually go to Kelly's which is an old bar and tons of people just standing around drinking---this is more of the drinking bar and not a club.
As far as shopping, besides the usual mall, the Plaza has great shopping. And as Betarulz said, the lights at Christmas are great--well worth the traffic jams and people to see them. |
