Playoff question....

How many wild card positions are there in the play-offs? How do they (whoever 'they' is) determine who gets the wild card slots? Is it based on the teams' records? And at what point are the wild card slots filled, at the VERY end of the season?

I guess what I really need to know is, what is Cleveland's chances of getting a wild card slot?

There are two wild card playoff slots, Soror. Those two teams play for the right to play the division winner with the weakest record.

Oakland and Pittsburgh are the winners of the AFC West and Central, respectively. Right now, Miami would be the division winner with the weakest record.

The Browns are 6-7; New England, the New York Jets, Baltimore and several other teams have better records for now. I'm not well-versed on tie-breakers, so I will defer to someone else.

Two per division, or two period?

I just want to reiterate, what happened in Cleveland on Sunday was some BULLCHIT.

Two AFC and two NFC teams are wild cards.

The wild card teams are selected by conference and division records. There are only three wild card spots per conference (6 spots all together). If a team has won their Division (for instance the Steelers won the AFC Central) They are ranked one of the top three teams in their conference. AFC Central-Steelers, AFC West-Raiders, AFC-EAST- Dolphins. Now that you have the division winners of the AFC conference they are ranked according to records (1.) Steelers 11-2 (2.) Raiders 10-3 (3.) Dolphins 9-4.
Then comes the three wild card teams according to records. Right now with three games left it's not guaranteed but it looks like the three teams in the AFCwill be New England 9-5, Jets 8-5 and the Ravens 8-5. Unfortunately the Browns at 6-7 will have to win all of their last three games AND New England would have to lose all three OR the Ravens would lose two of their last three. (Tie breaker goes to Cleveland) The BAD news is that the Browns have Pittsburgh, Tennessee and Green Bay for their final three games. Basically an ice cube in HELL!

WRONG!!! There are three in each division. The third place division winner plays in the wild card playoffs, the top two teams get a BYE in that round.

WRONG!!!

There are three in each conference. Thats probably what you meant though.

About Cleveland:
Quote:

Browns fans can wave goodbye to any thoughts of a miraculous trip to the playoffs. Sunday's loss to the Jaguars dropped the Browns record to 6-7 and essentially ended their playoff hopes. At this point, finishing the season at .500 would be a moral victory for a young and talented Cleveland team.
BTW, ^^^That is from ESPN.com
