University of Minnesota- expansion
Does any one know what sororities are applying for the expansion at the University of Minnesota?

I'd love to see the KD chapter re-opened at U of M. There's an alumnae organization in the Twin Cities and one in Rochester, but no collegiate chapter in the state.
|
So many closed chapters! Rooting for the return of any of them!

Here are all the details.

We told you it's a slow process! We weren't kidding. Be patient, there will probably be an answer by the end of the semester. But maybe not. Take a look at Alabama, which has been open for expansion for, what, more than a year? I'm thinking even longer than that. Just because it appears clear that there is room for another sorority on campus, there's so much more to it than that, including alumna support which some sororities may not think they have in sufficient numbers to support a Big 10 collegiate chapter. There's also the challenge of scheduling the meetings to decide among the submissions and then scheduling the presentations from the selected submissions. To make it fair, you want to have all (probably 3) sororities visit within a short time frame, but maybe the expansion committees are busy, either with their lives (these are generally unpaid non-employees who are alumna volunteers) or with other presentations or actual colonies. And these meetings also have to compete with mid-terms, campus events, etc. And then after the presentations happen, more meetings have to happen for discussion and voting. It's amazing it ever happens!

^^^ exactly right on point, DS.
And then there is always the unexpected glitch or snafu that inevitably occurs at any point, which can torpedo the entire process. I know whereof I speak. |
Do any of the chapters formerly at University of Minnesota still own their houses?
Delta Delta Delta Theta 1894-2004 Alpha Xi Delta Mu 1907-1960/1983-1986 Kappa Delta Sigma Beta 1918-1972 Sigma Kappa Alpha Eta 1921-1961 Chi Omega Pi Beta 1921-1989 Delta Zeta Gamma 1923-1965 Zeta Tau Alpha Alpha Tau 1923-1959 Phi Mu Zeta Eta 1925-1935/1946-1970 Alpha Delta Pi Alpha Rho 1928-1987 Delta Phi Epsilon Tau 1929-1932 Sigma Delta Tau Nu 1929-200? I believe Delta Delta Delta sold their house after they closed in 2004. |
Relax. You seem way more into this than your daughter is and I am sure they will announce things when they know them so she will know when she needs to.
|
In her defense, we have no idea what her daughter is thinking or saying. As someone who doesn't know the process, mom could be antsy for decisions (we've all been there, done that with one school or another), but I wouldn't exactly plop her in the psycho category or anything. And her daughter could be talking about this 3 times a day every single day. Or not at all. We don't know.
This is going to be an interesting one because no NPC sororities have that awesome of a presence in the state of Minnesota, and northern Iowa and western Wisconsin aren't exactly hotbeds of Greek life. The school has been seen as more or less a commuter school for years, but there are physical structures to contend with. But the sororities have been doing well over the last couple years, and unless the University of Minnesota is some sort of bizarre anomaly, they can expect continued growth. And we all like the idea of re-colonizing our defunct chapters. And Minnesota certainly has plenty of those! So we sit and wait. |
I'd love to see Tri Delta recolonize. That's the chapter I originally rushed at.
I'm sort of curious if/how the climate has changed over the last 20+ years. I don't live in the Cities anymore. I remember the campus being somewhat...hostile...to Greeks when I was there. But if they're open to expansion maybe that's changing? |
I would not call the campus culture hostile towards Greeks anymore. However, I would say there's a pretty general division between people that are involved in Greek life, the students who are not involved and think the Greeks have entitlement issues, and then the generally oblivious campus public.
I would agree with DubaiSis in that Minnesota is not a super Greek campus. Although the Greek community has been flourishing (minus a couple setbacks) over the past couple years. This past year, we saw record numbers in both PHC and IFC recruitment. Many chapters saw one of their largest pledge classes ever. As for who's coming to campus, I believe representatives from about five sororities visited within the past few weeks. And the contenders will formally be announced within the next few weeks. |

It should be okay. The U is in the Twin Cities and there are a fair number of people who relocate to the cities for work. The U is also a decent state university and that community attracts grad students and professors from all over. I know that KD has an active alumnae chapter in the Cities, even though there hasn't been a chapter in the state of MN for decades. It's not going to be SEC level of alumnae support, but it should be okay. |
I just saw this! Looks like Tri Delta might be recolonizing our Theta chapter!

Phi Mu and Chi Omega are also contenders. Good luck to all!
