AGD vs. Alpha Gam
Our chapter has had some conversation about whether to call ourselves Alpha Gams or AGDs. We have always called ourselves AGD and were told by alums that we should only use Alpha Gam. Is either one a better term?
|
It is a preferance to use Alpha Gam because using AGD can turn into other things - like "always grabbing donuts" or something crappy. The usage of Alpha Gam prevents this.

After all of the songs that we sing with the words Alpha Gam, I would say that it is ok to use that terminology. I can't imagine that anyone would have to say all three greek letters, most people I know will recognize Alpha Gam and realize it's AGD!

For dome reason I prefer AGD over Alpha Gam...probably cuz thats all I heard my four years on campus. I know that when some from IHQ came to our chapter and heard us say AGD and write AGD, it was sort of frowned upon. BUt lots of orgs are doing it, like SDT. They are trying to be known as Sig Delts on campus. I for one will probably always favor SDT, it just sounds catchier.

I totally agree with using only Alpha Gam instead of AGD. There are too many negative crappy people who have nothing better to do than to think of "catchy" phrases to use with AGD.

i like both actually. but i will say, agd is a lot easier to use with cheers. it just sounds peppier and more things rhyme (sp???) with the sound "d" than the word "gam" ah well though.

My chapter was told by an LC that Internat'ls thinks "AGD" sounds like a drug...I dunno. Personally, I like the fact that you can't take "Alpha Gam" and turn it into "Alpha Grabba Donut", "All God's Dogs" or something ridiculous like that. Either way, I'm just glad I am an Alpha Gam Girl! Woo! :)

Sorry to interrupt, but I've found out one drawback to using nicknames instead of letters. Around my campus, we're known by almost everybody as the "Phi Sigs", I guess it's so ingrained that even one sorority send us a christmas card that was addressed "To the men of Phi Sigma"! I couldn't even believe that someone would just drop the last letter of our name, but I guess it happens sometimes.
By the way, the chapter of Alpha Gamma Delta at Montana State are the sweetest girls of all! They even sent us a card after we cut them down a Christmas tree when they couldn't come with us because of initiation conflicts. Dan Douthit |
As our rush shirts said a couple of years ago ... 'Alpha Gam I Am' (in keeping with our Cat in the Hat/Sam I Am theme).
Our chapter always uses Alpha Gam here, saying 'AGD' only in chants & cheers. It's funny ... just 2 hours away, the Iota chapter (UW) seems to only use AGD. When I visited their campus a few weeks back, I asked a ZTA member if she knew any Alpha Gam's & she looked at me like I was insane - it took her a few minutes to finally tell me that they did not have Alpha Gam's on their campus. Once I used 'AGD', turns out that one of her best friends is an Alpha Gam & that she'd never heard that term before (I think the fact that she was somewhat snockered probably had something to do with it). Cool girl though ... only ZTA I've met. Just my random contribution ... I'm going back to bed now!! ;) Happy New Year everyone :D LiEP, Jen Delta Zeta '97 |

You're Welcome!
Earlier this fall the AGDs on my campus held a philanthropy/pageant called Alpha Gam Guy where the fraternities on campus had one guy compete from every house. We had our pictures taken for a calendar and there was a trivia contest and banner contest as well. Anyway, my coaches for the event were the best and helped me out with every aspect of anything. Even though we didn't win, I had a lot of fun doing it and looking forward to the girls holding the contest next year! Dan |
