Does your GLO's "first ever" chapter still exist today?
 

Hi,
Most GLO's were founded many many years ago, either in 18xx or 19xx....so my question is:
Is your GLO's "first chapter" still in existence today?

I only ask, because in some cases, the college where the GLO was founded no longer exists, or the chapter is no longer there for various reasons. I thought this might make for an interesting discussion, too.

Kappa Kappa Gamma was founded at Monmouth College in 1870. As far as I know, there is a Monmouth University, but no longer is there just a college (but I could be wrong.) If Monmouth College is the same as Monmouth University, then unfortunately the chapter no longer exists there. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif But it's going strong elsewhere! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Delta Tau Delta was founded in 1858 at Bethany College (Virginia), now West Virginia.

The original "Alpha" Chapter has recolonized a couple of times and is now known as Theta-Founding Chapter.

Our oldest continuously existing chapter is the Beta Chapter at Ohio University which has been in existance at the same college since 1862.

The first chapter of Alpha Phi was founded at Syracuse University on Sept 10, 1872. It's still going very strong. Gamma Phi Beta was also founded there two years later and Alpha Gamma Delta in 1904(?.) Anyway, all three Alpha chapters are still very much alive.

The first chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. was chartered at Howard University in 1920. The chapter is still in existence -- and thrives -- to this day.

Alpha chapter of Lambda Chi is still going, as are many of the early chapters, of course the first LCA chapters are 91 years or younger, even though some that affiliated with LCA later are older.

I have a question, why do some of your founding chapters not have the Alpha designation??

KA was founded 1865 at Washington and Lee University. Our Alpha chapter is still there and going strong.

Our first Pi Beta Phi chapter--Illinois Alpha at Monmouth College--is going strong!

Chi Omega's first chapter, Psi, is called that because we go through the alphabet backwards. So, Alpha was actually number 20-something. However, I believe the longest continually open chapter was Tau, the second one. Back in the beginning of the 1900's a lot of universities made attempts to shut down their GLO's and other secret orgs. So, while Psi is a very strong chapter for Chi Omega, I think that it at least had to go "underground" for a few years. Does anyone else know of chapters of their group having to do that in the early 20th century?

Sigma Chi's Alpha Chapter started at Miami University in Ohio on June 28, 1855 and is still there today.

Our Alpha chapter (1904)of Alpha Gamma Delta is still in existance today at Syracuse University.

Alpha Chi's Alpha Chapter (Depauw University) is still around! In fact, the chapter just renovated their digs...it's GREAT!
