Auburn Coach not Returning

I don't know any details yet but I just received an email addressed to Auburn alums that Gene Chizik won't be returning. Huh. Only 2 years since the national championship.

IHeartUGA 11-25-2012 04:07 PM

Wow.

AOII Angel 11-25-2012 04:07 PM

Maybe Chizik decided to leave due to lack of support.

Can't say I am surprised - that's life in the SEC. There are probably a lot of ways they could have spent $7 million around campus though...

Yeah, but "What have you done for us lately?" all too often seems to be the guiding principle of college football and basketball.

But in this case, he didn't do anything at any point.

His national championship came 100% through Cam Newton and Gus Malzahn. Gene didn't even have a winning record at Iowa State. It was a poor hire to begin with.

I guess that means at least three coaching jobs in the SEC are now open:

Kentucky
Tennessee
Auburn

Anyone else?

HQWest 11-25-2012 05:31 PM

Arkansas

This seems to be no surprise. Some of the Auburn alumni here in town were "speculating" about how the school was just getting through the season so they wouldn't have to pay for breaking his contract.

southbymidwest 11-25-2012 05:45 PM

Total buyout is around $11 million- $7 million buyout for Chizik, $4 million for assistant/staff contracts.

IndianaSigKap 11-25-2012 05:56 PM

Do any of those jobs seem attractive right now? Will any of those schools be able to attract a top name?

Yep. Should have ours hired within the next ten days.

Its the Vanderbilt curse. Auburn, KY & TN all lost to Vanderbilt. Rule for SEC coaches - Don't lose to Vanderbilt.

At least Hugh Freeze at Ole Miss will escape the curse this year. He lost to Vanderbilt, which hurt like hell, but he beat Miss State to win the Egg Bowl... that is all that Rebels ask :p

This is hardly a new rule!

Re: Chizik. I'm reading some stuff now on al.com that points out major disciplinary and academic problems among the team. Haven't gotten into the NCAA investigation parts yet.
However...Auburn can and will rebuild to its usual worthy opponent status.
