Can anyone tell me about informal recruitment at U of I? Like which sororities participate and what you have to do?

Indiana, Illinois?????

It says UIUC so I'm thinking the University of Illinois-Champaign/Urbana, the main campus.

The best and most correct information would be gotten by contacting the greek life office at UIUC.

Most chapters doing spring recruitment (which I assume is what you are interested in) will start having events the first or second week of the new semester. Some of them will advertise, so watch the Panhellenic website linked above, ads in the DI, and even the sidewalk chalk on the quad.

However, some chapters won't advertise at all, so I recommend two things:

1) If you have friends who are in sororities, NOW is the time to let them know you might be interested. Try not to be creepy about it, but you can let them know you are considering Greek Life.

2) E-mail the Panhellenic VP listed on the website and tell her you are interested as well, and ask if she can forward your name along to the chapters that may be recruiting in the spring.

Basically, you want the chapters who aren't advertising to think "oh, we should invite this person over and see if she'd be a good fit".

So they reverse the letters? I would have never figured that out!

No, it's the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Most people outside of the U would refer to the metro area as Champaign-Urbana, but the campus itself is mostly in Urbana (I guess?), and the administrative offices are in Urbana, so that comes first.

How much do grades factor into recruitment?

I have two really great grades and then two "okay your're passing grades" but in classes that are generally known to be difficult like Chem and Math

It's the GPA that counts. They don't weight based on the importance or difficulty of the class. If you are literal when you're saying you just passed on a couple classes, your GPA is probably not going to be sufficient. Grades are EXTREMELY important. You can ask the Greek Life office, or check the chapter averages. That doesn't necessarily speak to their requirements, but if their average is a 3.0 and yours is a 2.5, I would not plan on getting any invitations.

If your grades are not good enough, and presuming you're a freshman, wait until next fall and make sure you get your grades up as much as you can. 1 bad semester at the beginning is easy to repair with a full load of very good grades. Pledging as a sophomore shouldn't be a huge problem at UofI.

Illinois has mountains of data available on their website. You can find answers to a lot of your questions there.

It depends how bad your GPA is, but I'd say they matter less in informal than in formal. How bad are we talking, here? If you have 2 A's and 2 C's for a 3.0, you're probably fine. 2 A's and 2 D's is a different story.

This is great advice! It was only until I was a member that I discovered that informal recruitment was actually a bit more common than I had originally thought. (Not saying all chapters participate; that is certainly not the case).

During my time on campus, there were only 2-3 chapters every spring that posted open events for informal recruitment. However, I came to learn that several other sororities would participate if they happened to have a few spots open.

I highly recommend following DBB's advice.

When exactly do chapters see or ask for your grades for informal?

Alright, so you're still looking at a 3.0. That should be fine. All they see is a GPA, so they have no idea if you got a D that is balanced out by two A's or straight B's.

They can't see your grades until you give them permission to do so, as there is no actual "registration" for informal, but they will most definitely check before initiation, i.e. your bid is likely pending a grade release.

OK, that's a lot different than your original post. First, do everything you can to salvage that D (if it's not too late - I don't know when your finals are), but if you really do end up with 2 A's, your GPA should end up fine. Then, do the things mentioned above. Do let your sorority member friends know you are interested in rush, let the Greek Life office know you're interested, and keep an eye on the DI and/or Facebook pages for further information.

If it doesn't go well and you think it might be because of grades, you can try again next fall. And do keep in mind that you're not going to have a big list of sororities from which to choose. You may have to take a chance on a sorority by gut instinct, and there's nothing wrong with that. Just because a chapter isn't at total doesn't mean they don't have a lot to offer.

to be barely passing grades.

The class where I have a D in the final is worth 30% so I was hoping that would be enough to change my grade

I thought if you rushed one year that you had to wait for another full year to pass before you can re-rush?
