Chico State (CA) in the News Again: Fraternities, Sororities "Suspended"

Chico State (CA) has “suspended” fraternities and sororities. If I remember correctly, Chico State has had problems in the past. About this latest development, for some details and background, see

Chico State fraternities and sororities are suspended immediately pending administrative review, Chico State President Paul Zingg announced today at a meeting for the Greek community.

The decision was based on an accumulation of events that have occurred since the beginning of last semester, Zingg said. “ . . .

Surprise, surprise, surprise....

Surprise, surprise, surprise....

This has been going on for years at Chico State.

As I understand it they have at least one unrecognized local that is notorious for hazing.

I totally agree with the statements regarding reading charters. Let's not get to the point of calling 911.

1. You should be very careful about posting information regarding an ongoing investigation.
2. Chico has a long history of incidents and issues. The president knows that. The people on GC know that. It has been up to Chico greeks to prove themselves for a very long time. The article linked above indicates that this was not the only incident this calendar year.
3. A young man has died. He was a fraternity pledge. Obviously this is going to lead to an investigation regarding the fraternity's involvement. The campus has what? a month til finals? It won't hurt anything to take a month off, take a pause to stop and think.
4. Fact: You cannot drink that much alcohol and survive. Question: Why do college kids think they can? Why do others encourage it or allow their friends to do it?

Thank you.

and a tiny bit more in this story

http://www.sfgate.com/news/article/C...th-4042550.php

Excerpts from ^^:

"Paul Zingg announced the suspension in a noon meeting with about one-third of the 1,200 students who belong to 26 fraternities and sororities at Chico State. He barred them from holding activities and ordered them to remove or cover up the Greek letters on their chapter houses.

The school's vice president for student affairs, Drew Calandrella, who also addressed the meeting, told the students that he understood some were upset about the decision, but "I'm asking all of you to reflect on what you stand for."

According to local news reports, Mason Sumnicht, a senior who majored in communication design, was found unconscious in his apartment last week after a night of drinking at bars with friends to celebrate his 21st birthday. He was taken off life support and pronounced dead Thursday.

A campus newspaper said Sumnicht, a native of San Diego, was pledging the Sigma Pi fraternity.

Calandrella said there had been other serious incidents at the school's fraternities and sororities this year, including allegations of hazing and assaults as well as violations of alcohol policy.

ETA: The San Francisco Chronicle mentions in another story that fraternities and sororities will be allowed to apply to reopen next semester, but not all will be allowed to return.

Exactly how this would work, the Chronicle's article does not say.

The Beta Omega chapter of Phi Kappa Tau received accreditation at CSU Chico. This is the first major re-recognition step for all the Greek organizations at CSUC. With satisfactory completion of the remaining workshop and training requirements, Beta Omega will be allowed to begin recruiting March 1.
