SUNY-Albany: 9 Arrested for Hazing

http://blog.timesunion.com/asp/2637/...ed-for-hazing/

9 members of Sigma Alpha Mu were arrested for hazing. Police/officials were called and found pledges with heads submerged in water and being hit with wooden paddles and rubber hoses.

If this is true they deserve to go to jail.

SMH. Where there is smoke... Hadn't we been hearing things about this campus?

I know there was talk about hazing being a big problem at SUNY Binghamton, but it's possible this campus had a rep for it too.

Maybe that's the campus I'm thinking of.

Ohhh, SUNY. What are we gonna do with you?

Aren't all New York public colleges called SUNY or CUNY though? I really hope this isn't a derp moment where someone reminds me of a major example where this is not the case.

Do all state colleges in NY even have Greek life, let alone this reputation?

SUNYs in general have had this reputation. Pretty well earned in my estimation.

IMO, this goes back to the history of GLOs in NY state. Sometime in the (40s or 50s), the NY state legislature passed a requirement in the public NY colleges that did not allow any GLO to have anti-discrimination policies. At the time, the majority of GLOs have clauses that were discriminatory against non-whites and, in some cases, religious affiliation. Many chapters had to sever their ties with their national organizations. Chapters founded at the state schools after the enactment were all local, never having a tie with national groups.

I will not be so bold to say that hazing does not exist in other state schools, but without national orgs to keep an eye out, IMO hazing got a strong toe-hold in the SUNY schools that has not been let go.

National groups began to reenter the SUNY system in the 80s. However, many of those groups later severed their ties again or were shuttered by their nationals for hazing.
