Iowa SAE Closure: Background, Some Past History
An article delves into the history of relationships between / among a college chapter, the university administration, and Sigma Alpha Epsilon's HQ.
Interesting, I think, because it seems to show that promised improvements don't always happen, nor do threatened sanctions. This lack of follow-through certainly isn't confined to just this one campus or GLO, of course. See http://www.press-citizen.com/article...dent-SAE-house |
Apparently a lot more to this story then reported.
from a newspaper follow-up...what is not said is very intriguing....
"Kelly Jo Karnes, associate director of the UI Center for Student Involvement and Leadership, wrote in emails released by the university Tuesday that she believed “SEVERAL of our fraternities have been having these stripper parties … and we have a lot that will either follow suit or will need to clean house.” “I think that this is the tip of the iceberg,” Karnes wrote. Karnes made those comments in a Sept. 25 email to an official with the Kappa Alpha Theta fraternity office in Indianapolis. The two were discussing the suspension and closure of the UI chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, which was announced by that fraternity’s headquarters on Sept. 24. Melissa Shaub, director of education and training for the Kappa Alpha Theta fraternity, wrote in a email response to Karnes in that Sept. 25 exchange, “I just keep thinking about where the shot of alcohol was coming from. Sick, sick, sick.” The article talks about the chapter suspended for hazing after a sutdent was injured and went to the hospital. Unfortunately the writer never connected the story arc of strippers or to the closure of the chapter. THe last quote is equally bizarre without any context. |
Iowa has a history of having a huge fraternity presence, dumping a ton of them for the same stupid behavior (I believe last time it was drugs), and then slowly working their way back onto campus. When will they learn? Fraternities are supposed to be fun, not a 24/7 hour Bacchus party.
