Big Tex Goes Up In Flames

For all the Texas folks...

Quote:

DALLAS (October 19, 2012)—Big Tex, the iconic symbol of the State Fair of Texas, went up in flames Friday morning at Fair Park in Dallas.

Only his hands were still intact.

The fair’s vice president of marketing told WFAA-TV in Dallas an electrical short appears to have been the cause of the fire.

Witnesses said flames engulfed the 70-foot figure within five minutes, WFAA reported.

Other details weren’t immediately available.

He was 60 years old this year! Very sad!

I'm so sad. I can remember seeing him for the first time when I was about 4.

ComradesTrue 10-19-2012 04:29 PM

^^ Yes, me too. Such an iconic part of the fair, and always what everyone looked forward to seeing. Sad that there won't be anymore "How-dy Folks" for the rest of the fair run this year.

I'm curious as to how he returns next year- same ol' Big Tex, a 21st century version, or something else? Some fun suggestions on t_witter have him reincarnated as Nolan Ryan (yes!!), Troy Aikman, or Roger Staubach.

For those DFW area Ticket listeners, is it pathetic that Gordo is the first person that I thought of when I heard the news?

The Dallas Police escorted the "body" covered with a tarp from the Fair Grounds to an unnamed location. Flowers were being placed where he proudly stood. It's a sad day in Dallas.

Some people here in Dallas are just taking this whole thing awfully seriously! ;) Carting the "body" off covered by a tarp seemed a little silly, but I guess some little kids might have been upset. He will be back next, probably bigger & better!

Awful. I go to OU-TX almost every year. He's been a big feature.

Worst joke I have heard today: Well, they really DO fry everything at the State Fair

Tex is toast.

No more "Howdy, folks" every 30 minutes. Surely they'll replace him?!

Of course he will be replaced! They are already working on it & the Fair says he should be ready for the State Fair next year. The man who is the voice of Big Tex will even record new greetings and comments, so Big Tex will sound exactly the same. We don't take well to change around here :o
