Opinions on Local Sororities?

Heyy everyone,

I was just wondering, what are some of your opinions on local sororities as opposed to Pan-Hel?

misscherrypie 09-23-2012 05:32 PM

What do you mean?

lindseee 09-23-2012 06:12 PM

"Local" sororities are sororities that only have one chapter, so sororities that were started by students and say have only 60 or so members.

This is a Greek Life site. We know what they are. The thing is, we're wondering what you want us to tell you about them?

We can't really tell you whether or not to join one. Locals are different wherever they are. There are some on some campuses that are older, more established, have more members and are perceived as more desirable than their NPC counterparts. In other instances, they're new to campus and not as big.

It really depends. Just meet members of all chapters on your campus and go from there.

Local sororities have minimum standards for membership, too. They are not necessarily "easier" to get into, IF that is what you are thinking. You have plenty of work to do already. Pledge the library and get those grades up!

I have nothing against local sororities. I do, however, disagree with how the locals on my campus choose hazing to prove who is worthy of sisterhood.

^^^ What she said.

Oh no :( I'm sorry that's going on at your school. I just wanted to clarify (as a founder of the local sorority the OP is talking about--we are the only local on our campus) that our house never, ever hazes or condones hazing.

Always AlphaGam, have you thought about reporting the hazing activities to the GLO governing body, or whichever body oversees the locals? Or has this already been done without results? I'd hate to see these houses potentially sullying the reputations of other locals because they might be taking advantage of a (perceived) lack of national oversight.

That's a good one, the locals on that campus have hazed openly for years.

Xidelt 10-07-2012 10:53 PM

Lay off, Carnation. She doesn't know the situation on whatever campus you are referring to.

carnation 10-07-2012 11:24 PM

"Lay off"?" I think not.

I already stated the situation. The locals there hazed openly and cruelly right in front of the Lord and everybody. They even hazed in front of the professors and administrators who were eating in the cafeteria. No one batted an eye. I worked with 3 new members who quit soon after the hazing began and they told us hair-raising stories about what happened behind closed doors.

The IFC and Panhellenic alum groups were thrilled when nationals came to campus! Finally, students could see that you could have brother- and sisterhood without running down the new members.

I am told that on many campuses, locals don't haze and maybe they don't at UGa, Xidelt. What I saw at both the last campus where I taught and at AlwaysAlphaGam's campus, though, was intense and cruel.

Xidelt 10-07-2012 11:39 PM

And so how is PhiAlpha responsible for that? She made a logical and rational suggestion based on what someone posted. I'm not seeing how that warranted your snark.

AZTheta 10-07-2012 11:42 PM

Wait - time out - or swerve or whatever. OP - you joined a local? You were asking a while back about whether your low GPA would adversely affect your recruitment, if memory serves. So, I gather from your other thread about athletic mixers and what PhiAlpha posted that you now have joined a local? And you want opinions about locals?

amIblue? 10-07-2012 11:48 PM

I think this thread was posted before she pledged. It just got bumped today.

PhiAlpha05 10-08-2012 12:19 AM

Hey guys--sorry for the confusion. I'm not sure what the OP ended up doing, actually (though if she has any questions for me, I'm happy to help)--we did pledge a Lindsey this term, but she's a freshman, so definitely not the same girl. I wish the OP the best in whatever she decides about her Greek involvement!
