Sorority recruitment at Fresno State was delayed because of this incident. This decision was made by Administration, not CPC. Recruitment should have been starting this weekend. Has been rescheduled for mid-October.

Sororities will be missing out on a month's dues, etc from their new members because of this. I see big budget adjustments because of it.

Is certainly a tragedy, but why punish the sororities???

Really? I understand that you're concerned, but have the decency to keep your insensitive opinion to yourself.

What an unfortunate story... Sad for his family

Why is what she said insensitive? Should a campus of 24,000 students suspend classes when a student dies as well? How dare they go to class.

It seems very callous to me to be complaining about money/being inconvenienced by someone's death.

I understand that this is a hassle for the Panhellenic community, but I appears the university is asking the community to pause for a moment, at least in respect to this young man and his family, but perhaps also because they want to reevaluate alcohol management in the whole community.

Maybe I'm more sensitive because of my interations with similar situations. I find this insensitive, YMMV.

Gusteau, I can see your point but I also see Ladybug12's: the sororities will be out huge amounts of money even from missing one month's new member dues. It's punishing them financially for something they're not at fault for!

Gusteau 09-07-2012 10:38 AM

Carnation, I do realize that's a valid concern an the Panhellenic women are certainly validated in their frustration. I also feel that it's poor form to say so openly.

When reading ladybug12's comment my heart jumped to Dave Westol's powerful presentation of "Hazing on Trial" and it was upsetting to me.

ladybug12 09-07-2012 10:40 AM

I certainly meant no disrespect for this student's family, and am sorry if my comments came off as insensitive.

Thanks Ladybug12 - I know you didn't intend that.

I was rather short with you too, and I'm sorry for that.

I am the financial adviser for a chapter, so that part of my brain kicked in automatically...:o

Can I just say that it is nice to see two people who had a misunderstanding on here address it without getting personal and concluding with those two simple words, "I'm sorry". Very nice and classy to you both.

^^^ I agree. :)

This is such a sad situation. As a parent whose oldest has just started college, I can't imagine the pain of sending a child off to college, only to lose him two weeks later.

carnation 09-07-2012 04:03 PM

I agree with LaneSig and Sciencewoman! I don't remember the last time anyone apologized on the boards! :)

Kevin 09-07-2012 04:12 PM

It is no coincidence that certain people have decided to stop frequently the forum, but yeah.

At any rate, I just don't see the point in shutting down sorority recruitment for something a handful of dumb kids did at a school of 24,000 people. Total overreaction on the part of the Greek Life office.
