How long did it take for you to get close to your brothers/sisters?

Did you immediately become close with your brothers/sisters, or did it take some time for you to really open up around them?

It took quite a bit of time. For me, especially, I was in a very rotten relationship and not balancing a boyfriend/friends well at all.

Everyone is different. Don't be upset if people seem like BFFs 5 minutes after bid day. Those often aren't the friendships in the chapter that last the longest.

ETA: if you are having problems that need serious, professional attention (like an eating disorder, cutting, drug or alcohol abuse etc) PLEASE see a professional. Your brothers/sisters can be great sources of support once you are on a plan and path to recovery, but they aren't trained to handle things like that.

In my case, we had a rather unusual type of deferred rush. I was very comfortable with a few sisters by the time I pledged (please note the ancient words - our rush was six weeks long!). Sadly, there were a couple sisters with whom I was never close, but in a large chapter, it didn't really matter. I feel certain that, if I saw them today, I would do my best to "respect the pin" and try to get more comfortable with those few.

I think the first time I felt really comfortable was when I moved into the house. I was in a fairly large chapter and was close to a few people, but those were mainly in my big/little family such as my grandbig and my twin. For me to really make friends, I had to live in close quarters.

I made it a point to get to know everyone in the chapter as soon as I got a bid. So, by the time my first semester of college ended, I was extremely close with a few people and close with just about everyone else. Keep in mind, though, since you're getting new members every semester (and because people change quickly in college), you the "getting closer" process never ends.

All of my Brothers, though, despite how short or long I have known them, are truly my Brothers. They're always there when I really need them.
